Title:
Heard family business records, 1754-1898 (inclusive) [microform].
Business records and personal papers of several generations of the Heard family. The oldest group of papers, 1770-1834, is that of John Heard, who made his wealth from the manufacture and sale of rum, the outfitting of privateers, and trade with the West Indies. The largest and most important group of papers in the collection is that of Augustine Heard and his various partnerships. His papers cover, first, his travels as supercargo for Boston and Salem merchants who were trading in the Far East, then his activities as partner in the great shipping firm of Russell and Company. In 1836 he left Russell and Company. By 1840 he had become the head of his own firm, Augustine Heard and Company, founded with Joseph Coolidge. Included in the collection are records and papers of Thomas Hunt and Company of Hong Kong, 1863-1869, which counted Augustine Heard and Company among its customers.

Papers, 1812-1865.
The Samuel Francis Du Pont Papers include correspondence with more than 1,500 individuals. There is a good deal of official and semi-official correspondence describing naval practices and policies as well as Du Pont's career. Of particular interest are letters from British diplomats and naval officers during the 1840s and 50s describing the operations of the British Navy. Letters received from William B. Reed, American minister to China, document the negotiations leading up to the Treaty of Tientsin which opened up China to western trade. Letters from American missionaries Samuel Wells and William and Edward Syle describe the missionary movement in China and efforts to eradicate the opium trade. The files also contain correspondence reflecting Du Pont's role in the Naval Efficiency Board and the reform movement which sought to modernize the navy as it moved into the age of steam.

Heard family business records, 1754-1898 (inclusive)

Forbes family business records, 1753-1968 (inclusive).
The Forbes family business records contain an enormous amount of material pertaining to the one of the most important families of Boston merchants engaged in the China trade during the nineteenth century. The collection consists mainly of account books, letter books, and loose correspondence relating to the China trade beginning with brothers Thomas Tunno, Robert Bennet, and John Murray Forbes and later with Paul Siemen Forbes and Francis Blackwell Forbes. The correspondence and account books document commercial trade activities of Forbes family members as partners in the firm Russell & Co. Business partners and correspondents include Augustine Heard, Houqua, John Perkins Cushing, Thomas Handasyd Perkins, Abraham Ellerman, Augustine Heard, Perkins and Company, Baring Brothers & Co., J. & T.H. Perkins & Sons, Bryant & Sturgis, Purdon and Wiggin, and Walker and Wren . Also included is correspondence of John M. Forbes while serving as United States consul at Hamburg and Copenhagen, and United States agent at Buenos Aires. Forbes family members were closely connected to Shewan-Tomes Company, Perkins Company, and the Shanghai Navigation Company. Later materials relate to the private banking investment firm J.M. Forbes & Co. consisting of financial records, estate and trust accounts, and the records of companies that J.M. Forbes & Co. held significant shares of. The material related to J.M. Forbes & Co. documents the extensive administration and redistribution of wealth made by Forbes family members during the China trade and the establishment of trusts in order to ensure continued prosperity. Also included is material relating to W. Cameron Forbes consisting of correspondence, financial and legal papers, and material relating to his appointment as governor-general of the Philippines, interests in Forbes-Perkins Company, and commissioner of the Massachusetts Street Railway Commission. The collection includes original and copied documents and claims of the ship Macedonian pertaining to two separate seizures in 1819 and 1820 by the Chilean Navy. Correspondence and other documents relate to efforts for recompense of stolen monies and goods.

Correspondence, financial records, and fifteen volumes of diaries kept by Robert Bennet Forbes, ship captain, China Trade merchant, shipbuilder, and philanthropist of Milton and Boston, Mass. Much of the collection relates to Forbes' command of the Jamestown, a ship sponsored by the New England Committee for the Relief of Ireland and Scotland (NECRIS) to provide relief for famine victims in Ireland in 1847, including correspondence, financial records, Forbes' letterbook, lists of provisions, and records of other ships involved in the venture. Forbes' lifelong interest in shipbuilding is also represented in the collection, particularly during the Civil War when he negotiated with the U.S. Navy to build ships for the Union cause and later made and sold ships to Congress. Other areas of Forbes' life documented in the collection include his career as a China Trade merchant, first with J. and T.H. Perkins and Sons and later as head of Russell and Co., with which Perkins and Sons merged in 1830; his philanthropic work as a founder of the Sailor's Snug Harbor in Boston and the National Sailor's Home in Quincy; and his work building lifeboats for the Humane Society of Mass. Forbes' diaries were kept from 1840-89 and document virtually all aspects of his life, including trips to Europe and a voyage to South America in the Roy Nankin in 1858, however they were not kept in China or during his voyage in the Jamestown (except for a summary of events written after the fact). Correspondents include Gideon Welles.
