Papers of John Perkins Cushing and family, 1803-1864.

Papers include an early letter to his grandmother, Elizabeth Perkins (1803), followed by letters received as an adult from Thomas Handasyd Perkins (1825), J.T. Perkins (1830), Adeline Welles (1830, ordering furnishings "in the Chinese style" for her boudoir), and the Chinese merchant Howqua (1836), among others, mainly concerning business matters connected with the China trade. Also included are letters of the children of J.P. Cushing (ca. 1848) and two papers of Robert M. Cushing, a letter from his sister (1855) and an inventory of household furnishings received (1864). The seven volume diary, which runs from August 1834 to November 1856 contains information on domestic affairs (visits of friends, purchase of furniture), business affairs (accounts, interviews with associates, dealings with Bryant & Sturgis, and Robert Bennet Forbes, etc.), the weather, & his interests in Massachusetts agriculture and horticulture.
