The collection pertains to Spain's colonies in the Americas and the Philippines. Colonial governance, indigenous peoples and languages, Spanish conquerors, the Catholic Church and the Inquisition, Juan de Palafox y Mendoza's conflicts with viceroy Diego López Pacheco Escalona and the Jesuits, voyages by Spanish explorers to the South Pacific, and drainage of the Valley of Mexico are among the topics documented. The bulk of the collection is comprised of literary productions, legal and official documents, correspondence, government records, church and convent records, diaries, inventories and lists, maps and drawings, financial documents, and printed documents. Included in the collection are 42 original sixteenth-century relaciones geográficas, as well as codices, Nahuatl dictionaries and bilingual textbooks for religious instruction of Indians. Two volumes entitled "Varias relaciones," 1610-1703, contain over 200 printed or handwritten reports of events in Europe, the Americas, and Asia.

Title: Thomas Allibone and Catherine Ann Drinker Janvier papers 1856-1908

Thomas Allibone Janvier (1849-1913) was an American journalist and author; Catherine Ann Drinker Janvier (1841-1922) was a painter and author. They traveled extensively in Mexico, England and France and wrote guidebooks, fictional works and translations. While living in Provence, Thomas Janvier wrote several studies of the region and its people and Catherine Janvier translated works by Provencal authors. During their travels they collected manuscripts, pamphlets and other printed works related to Provence and Mexico (they donated many of these works to the New York Public Library). Collection contains correspondence, papers concerning the Provencal movement and Mexico, miscellaneous papers, and Spanish and Mexican manuscripts. General and subject correspondence, 1877-1908, includes letters to and from the Janviers regarding publishing arrangements and social matters, Provence and Mexico. Papers relating to the Provencal movement, 1894-1908, include correspondence with Provencal authors and poets, notes and printed matter. Mexican materials, 1886-1895, consist of correspondence, notes, printed matter, and two votive paintings on tin. Miscellaneous papers contain notes taken by Thomas Janvier for his histories of New York City and printed matter. Spanish and Mexican manuscripts date from the 17th and 18th centuries and include tax lists and estate papers.

Title: Relaciones geográficas of Mexico and Guatemala, 1577-1585.

The collection consists of 43 relaciones geográficas (one a 19th-century copy) prepared by local officials in New Spain in response to the 1577 questionnaire mandated by King Philip II. Forty-one pertain to territory in present-day Mexico; two relate to what is now Guatemala. The relaciones contain historical, cultural, and geographical information on New Spain and its peoples during the 16th century and before the conquest. Twenty-one relaciones are accompanied by printed questionnaires; 26 are accompanied by one or more maps, known as pinturas. The 37 pinturas are significant in their own right, not only as adjuncts to the texts. In addition to conveying historical information about such topics as 16th-century architecture, the spread of European religion in New Spain, and the colonial economy, the pinturas are artifacts for the study of the history of Latin American art and manuscript painting. The "Relación de Texcoco" is a 19th-century manuscript copy; another copy, probably made in the 17th century, is part of the Genaro García Collection, which also is housed at this institution.

Invoices and business correspondence (1887-1898) of Placido Pastor, a Mexico City purchasing and shipping agent for wheat, corn, sugar, unfermented maguey juice, and brandy from haciendas in the states of Mexico, Puebla, and Morelos. Suppliers frequently invoiced include individuals from the Araoz, Cortina, Espinosa, Fernández, Garcés, Lavie, and Sanz families, who were members of the Compañía Expendedora de Pulques; Juan Pagaza; Joaquín García Icazbalceta; and Luis García Pimentel. As general agent for Octavio Conde, Pastor corresponded at some length with Colonel Manuel Alarcón concerning disputed water rights around Ocuituco and with General Jesús Preciado during negotiations to bring a railway trunk line to Cuernavaca. Pastor's 90 letters contain details of rural politics in the states of Puebla and Morelos, land transactions, and hacienda administration.

Made in response to a life-long desire to observe Mexico and its people, about which he had been writing for several years. Gives his impressions of the leading figures in the country, and the development and content of Mexican libraries and archives, particularly the Archivo General de la Nación. Contains a copy of a detailed report on the latter institution prepared by Justino Rubio of Mexico City, November 3, 1883.
