Material collected by Hench, some as an autograph collection and others for use in his classes at the University of Virginia with examples of various periods. Modern autographs collected by Hench include letters by associates of Edgar Allan Poe; Civil War letters; papers relating to Virginia history; correspondence of writers and politicians, particularly from the Victorian era; and other miscellaneous correspondence with literary or histocial interest. Gerald Massey writes to Osgood & Co. and [James T.?] Fields on book sales, a publishing venture and American lectures. Dabney Herndon Maury sends an autograph and writes to the Piedmont & Arlington Life Insurance Company on a business matter and expressing concern on the business situation in New Orleans. Matthew Fontaine Maury to James H. Armsby, Bond & Son, and John D. Simms accepts an invitation to visit the Dudley Observator and Meet O. M. Mitchell, reports on the trial of varaious chronometers and recommends an appointment. Letters of Mary Russell Mitford to William Cox Bennett, Frances Trollop and others criticize the work of Henry Chorley and John Hughes, discusses her "Recollections of a literary life...."; solicit the patronage of Lord Nugent; recommends Bennett to Mrs. Acton Tindal, describes a packet containing work by John Greenleaf Whittier and Oliver Wendell Holmes; a bad fall suffered by Elizabeth Barrett Browning; a production of her play by [Charles?] Kemble; and mentioning Digby Starkey, the widow of Eliot Warburton, Joseph Hume. Letters of John S. Mosby to Eben Swift and Marcus J. Wright discuss Civil War incidents including his "closest call" and the objective of Pleasonton's attacks on Stuart at Brandy Station together with an autograph and a signed photograph. Also a letter of John Ware Mosby to George S. Palmer arranging a safe conduct pass for Mosby in May of 1865 so he can obtain a parole from General Halleck. Letters of his sister Victoria P. Mosby convey Richmond social news of 1842. Letters of Charles Eliot Norton to Dana Estes, C. C. Hazewell, Oliver Johnson, Andrew P. Peabody, Winslow Warren and others are chiefly brief social and business notes but include a letter about an archaelogical dig in Cotrone, Italy, conducted by Berlingieri and Clarke. Single letters of interest include Miles D. McAlester to Erasmus D. Keyes, 1862 August 25 concerning work parties for fortifications at Yorktown; W. Gordon McCabe to John Esten Cooke on a literary notice for a novel; Henry McKenzie to [Thomas?] Cadell on sales of "The Lounger"; Katharine Sarah Gadsden Macquoid to Roberts Brothers on the publication of "Dolly's grandfathers" in the U. S.; William H. McGuffey declining a request. Also William C. Macready to Mary Russell Mitford on publishing her play and his performance in "Julian"; Richard Kidder Meade to Samuel Pickens on the sale of Alabama land; James Montgomery sending thanks for a musical composition; Samuel McDowell Moore to John Letcher, 1861 September 3, on poor condition of roads which will hinder army transport and volunteering to supervise repair if given supplies and slave labor. Robert Nares to Thomas Cadell the Younger and reply on proofs for the completion of Macklin's Bible, together with engraving of Nares; and Yoné Noguchi to Madison Cawein on an evening with Joaquin Miller. The collection also contains an autograph of Joaquin Miller; a fragment by James Monroe on the acquisition of Florida.

The papers consist of the research files of Ulrich Bonnell Phillips, an author and history professor. The papers include Phillips's notes and transcripts of historical source materials and the collected papers of several southern families from 1712-1933. The collected papers include correspondence, account books, business records, farm and plantation records, diaries, photographs, and other papers which focus primarily on the years 1790-1865, and the Shenandoah Valley region of Virginia and the Piedmont region of Georgia. Phillips's own papers in the collection include a small amount of correspondence, lecture notes, typescript versions of published essays and reviews, transcripts of materials from various sources, his research notes arranged by topic, and related printed matter.

The collection contains the political correspondence of Alexander H.H. Stuart, particularly from 1850-1853, when he served in Fillmore's cabinet and from 1857-1861, when he was in the Virginia State Senate. The Whig Party is a major topic. Other topics include national and Virginia politics, the presidential elections of 1848, 1852, and 1868, the reestablishment of a national bank, the Virginia Reform Convention of 1850, the American Know-Nothing Party, and the Kansas-Nebraska Act. Also slavery, abolition, Southern conservative opposition to secession, Virginia elections of 1831, 1851, 1859, 1867, the aftermath of Nat Turner's rebellion, the use of statistics in government, the Confederate Congress, sectional reconciliation after the Civil War, the Readjustor controversy, political patronage, and internal improvements. Also mentioned are Revolutionary War pension claims, migration of free blacks to Liberia, affairs at the Chickasaw and Choctaw Indian Agency in 1851, California politics and Indians in 1851, the Tehuantepec Isthmus route, Iowa in 1851, San Francisco in 1854, New Orleans in 1861, West Virginia in 1861, the U.S.S. Princeton explosion, Dorothea Dix's efforts to establish hospitals for the mentally ill, building of the U.S. Capitol, the Virginia Central Railroad and the University of Virginia. Many letters convey local news in Staunton and Augusta County, Va., such as the development of Alum Springs, the establishment of the Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind, smallpox cases and land sales and controversies in Virginia and Kentucky. Others refer to legal cases handled by Stuart, including suits involving the Bath Iron Works and Buffalo Forge, and the Wheeling Bridge. Several letters discuss family affairs including plans by a cousin to run a boarding house for young women in Athens, Greece. Only a few letters mention the Civil War and Reconstruction and include references to the military movements of Confederate general Robert S. Garnett. Topics in earlier Stuart and the related Baldwin family papers include ratification of the U.S. constitution, Jeffersonian party politics, political events during the administration of George Washington, Washington Academy, the University of Virginia and its honor system, Washington College, and William Wirt's biography of Patrick Henry. The papers also contain an architectural drawing of an unidentified house, an engraving of Alexander H.H. Stuart, insurance policies, stock certificates, indentures, wills, land plats, and speeches by Alexander H.H. Stuart. Military papers of Captain George M. Cochran, Jr., Quartermaster, 52nd Virginia Infantry, consist chiefly of requisitions and receipts. There are also two printed pamphlets, 1849, in French and German, on the potato blight.

Papers of McCormick, inventor of the reaper and a Chicago industrialist, comprising correspondence, memoranda, and letterbooks concerning the growth of the McCormick Harvesting Machine Company in both the domestic and foreign fields, and dealing with McCormick's many other interests, particularly the Presbyterian Church and several charities; his activities as a member of the state and national Democratic party; and his investments, chiefly in Chicago real estate, railroads, and mines. Also included are deeds, contracts, investment proposals, and other documents. Some of the letters are to or from McCormick's wife Nettie Fowler, their son Cyrus, Jr., and others associated with the McCormick Harvesting Machine Co. The earliest dated items were written or received by Cyrus' father, Robert McCormick, and by other family members.

Papers of Davidson, a lawyer of Lexington, Virginia, including correspondence, personal financial records, legal accounts, travel diaries, and memoranda concerning his court cases. Also included are correspondence and records of members of his immediate family, especially two of his sons who practiced with their father until Greenlee was killed at Chancellorsville in 1863 and Charles A. died in 1879; and ledgers of Dorman and Davidson, kept by Davidson and his cousin, Charles P. Dorman, while they were partners, 1832-1841.

The collection contains correspondence concerning the selection of the University of Virginia over Washington and Lee as the site for an observatory, the building of the observatory at Virginia, fundraising, the establishment of astronomy scholarships and a major gift by William H. Vanderbilt . Of interest is an 1879 letter about Monticello as a possible telescope site, an 1870 letter from Frank L. Anderson at Washington and Lee announcing the death of Robert E. Lee, and detailed letters of advice on research to be conducted at the University from Joseph Henry of the Smithsonian, 1870, 1871. Correspondents include Frank Anderson, Alvan Clark, John Draper, Thomas H. Ellis, James Harrison, Joseph Henry, George Frederick Holmes, George D. Johnston, William Preston Johnston, Leander J. McCormick, Leander McCormick-Goodhart, Robert Hall McCormick, Samuel A. Mitchell, S. McDowell Moore, Simon Newcomb, J. H. Safford, A. H. H. Stuart, Charles Scott Venable and William A. Winston. In addition the collection contains plans and a blueprint for the observatory by Wilson Brothers & Co., of Philadelphia. There is also an article from Nature, 1870 February 17, on the Newall telescope, annotated by [Leander J. McCormick?] and inscribed by him to his grandson.
