Title: Business records, 1792-1855.

The bulk of this collection falls within the period late 1790s through the 1830s. The collection includes business correspondence, bills from printers, bills for presses and type, inventory records, and legal documents (partnership agreements, copyright certificates, and leases). There are business papers of Melvin Lord dating to 1855. Applications for copyright, 1801-1839, 1850, are filed in box 1, folder 2. Small receipts and orders are filed in the last folder of box 5. The rest of the manuscripts are arranged in boxes 1 through 5 in alphabetical order by writer or name of business. Correspondents include: Ebenezer Turrell Andrews (1766-1851), Carter, Hendee & Company, Nathaniel Cheever (1778-1819), Collins & Company, Evert Duyckinck (1764?-1833), Peter Edes (1756-1840), Jonathan Hagar (1779-1855), James Hammond (1784-1866), the Handel & Haydn Society of Boston, J. & J. Harper, Hezekiah Howe (1775-1838), Clarendon Harris (1800-1884), John Hutchens (1794?-1833), Lowell Mason (1792-1872) (there is also correspondence to Mason in care of West, Richardson & Lord scattered throughout the collection by writer), James Thacher (1754-1844), Isaiah Thomas, Jr. (1773-1819), and Wilkinson, Kemp & Suggett (in London). There are also manuscripts written by the various partners. The first item in box 1, folder 4 is a list of booksellers in the United States, c. 1834.
