The Rutherfurd Family Papers is one of four discrete but closely related collections, known together as the Alexander-Stuyvesant-Rutherfurd Collections. The Rutherfurd Family Papers contain material created by or pertaining to members of the Rutherfurd and Alexander families of New York City and New Jersey, and the Reid family of New York City and Great Britain. The collection is arranged into series for each of the members of the respective families represented in the collection. The principal subseries within each of these series are: Correspondence; Legal Papers; Accounts, Bills, Receipts; and Surveys.

Papers, 1721-1879 (bulk 1765-1840), consisting of correspondence, legal papers, deeds and land patents, record and account books, and miscellaneous papers. The material concerns members of the Rutherfurd, Alexander, and Reid families, who were related by marriage; the largest groups of material relate to James Alexander, William Alexander (Lord Stirling), Walter Rutherfurd, and John Rutherfurd. There are also papers of mary Rutherfurd, in her capacity as executrix of John Rutherfurd's will. Much of the material has to do with the families' land holdings; members of all three families held shares in the Propriety of the Eastern Division of New Jersey, and in the Second Nine Partners Tract in New York. It includes surveys (including a volume of surveys of the Ramapo Tract in New Jersey dated 1767), rent rolls, memoranda about farms and tracts, legal papers, conveyances, and receipts (many for rents), as well as correspondence. There is a large group of letters relating to General John Reid's attempts to retain ownership of his American properties, which were under threat of confiscation because of his service in the British Army during the Revolution, including some from his daughter, Susanna Robertson; there is also material related to the settlement of his estate. There is another large group of letters from Judge Robert Morris, of New Jersey, and numerous letters from William Wilson of Clermont, which deal with Rutherfurd tenants in Little Nine Partners. Other people who wrote letters to members of the families include Cadwallader Colden, Lewis Morris, Robert Hunter Morris, and Thomas Penn. There is some material relating to the French and Indian War: Walter Rutherfurd's accounts for the 4th Battalion, 60th Royal American Regiment, and a list of provisions for the Niagara Expedition, probably created for William Alexander ca. 1759. Other papers include the will, dated July 28, 1715, of Governor Robert Hunter.

Van Blarcom, John. John Van Blarcom papers, 1772-1818.

Title: John Van Blarcom papers, 1772-1818.

The papers consist of the financial records, contracts, indentures and correspondence of John Van Blarcom, and cover the years 1772 to 1818. The papers are divided by type of document, and are arranged chronologically. Amongst the papers are two real estate contracts, the first dated April 1, 1785, between the Proprietors of East Jersey, represented by Walter Rutherfurd and John Stevens, and John Van Blarcom, in which the Proprietors sold 78 acres of land to Van Blarcom for 234 Spanish Dollars. The other contract, dated February 5, 1787, is again between the Proprietors of East Jersey (represented by Azariah Dunham, John Stevens, and John Rutherford) and Van Blarcom. The title of the land in question was transferred to Van Blarcom for the sum of 500 United States dollars. Also included in the papers are loan agreements made by Van Blarcom with John Garrison, Peter Demarest, Jacobus Demarest, Abraham Brower, Hannah Jenkins, and David Mandeville. The loan agreements cover the time span from 1772 to 1818. The debts are in various amounts, and are in currencies such as Spanish dollars, New York dollars, and United States dollars. Two indentures are included in the papers; the first indenture is that of Timothy Thomas apprenticing himself to Evan Evans. The other indenture requires Peter Lebow and John Rap to pay the General Proprietors of East Jersey the sum of four pounds and sixteen shillings every year in rent for use of land for farming purposes. The indentures are dated July 27, 1780, and February 10, 1787, respectively. The papers also contain various promissory notes involving Van Blarcom, and cover the years 1775 to 1799. Other papers in the collection are various bills and receipts, along with the power of attorney of Mary Sherwood from 1790, as well as a fragment of the last will of Roger Griffith. A letter from Jonathan Wheeler to Van Blarcom dated April 11, 1789, completes the collection.

Papers, 1775-1835, consisting principally of material relating to John Rutherfurd and his father, Walter Rutherfurd. The collection also contains small amounts of material concerning John Duncan, Alexander Hamilton, General John Reid, and Alexander McDonald, as well as material related to two institutions with which John Rutherfurd was affiliated, the Society for Establishing Useful Manufactures, and the Corporation for the Relief of Widows and Children of Clergymen of the Protestant Episcopal Church. It consists of business correspondence, legal papers, and accounts, mainly concerning the Rutherfurds' landholdings in New York and New Jersey. The legal papers include powers of attorney from British officers and other people living outside the United States, leases, and deeds. There are also some field notes and surveys of tracts in various counties in New Jersey. Subjects include legal disputes; sale and lease of lands; tenants and rent collection; sheep farming and wool (the collection includes some samples of wool); roads and bridges in New Jersey, including some drawings of a proposed bridge between New Jersey and Pennsylvania; and the estate of General John Reid. A group of letters from the Rev. John Frederick Ernst inquires about settling members of his congregation in the Chenango Tract. There are also some abstracts of legislation about the New Jersey - New York boundary, and a map of a turnpike route through New Jersey.
