John J. Ide was an aeronautics consultant. As a young man, his education was enriched by extensive trips to Europe with his parents. He began his career in 1921 at the United States Embassy in Paris, remaining as a technical assistant on the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics until 1940. He also promoted United States participation in aviation exhibits beginning with the 1928 Air Exhibition in Paris. In 1940 he was recalled to active duty in the United States Naval Reserve, serving as head of the foreign Intelligence Branch, Bureau of Aeronautics, Navy Department. From 1943 to 1946 he was assigned as a technical air intelligence officer. Ending foreign duty in 1946, Ide remained a member of the Naval Reserve for the rest of his life. Returning to the United States, he turned his attention to activities and organizations which reflected his interests in architecture and the arts.
