Title:
Alexander Mackay-Smith Collection 1689-1827
The Mackay-Smith Collection's greatest strength is in contemporary editions of 18th-century instrumentalmusic, particularly trio sonatas. The collection shows similarity to the music section of Jefferson's catalogue of1783. The trio sonatas of Carlo Antonio Campioni (1720-1788), one of Jefferson's favorite composers, are especiallywell represented.

Hanover royal music archive, 1651-1951, 1770-1870
Title:
Hanover royal musicarchive 1651-1951 1770-1870
The Hanover Royal MusicArchive consists of printed and manuscript music, printed books about music, and related materials assembled by Ernest Augustus, King of Hanover, and hissuccessors. A significant component originated in England and concerns musicalactivity of several children of George III, circa 1770-1837, particularlyErnest Augustus, then Duke of Cumberland, and Princess Augusta, as well asPrince George of Cumberland, son of Ernest Augustus and later Georg V, King ofHanover. These materials moved to Hanover, apparently circa 1837 when ErnestAugustus succeeded William IV as King of Hanover. In Hanover, the collectionwas expanded by Ernest Augustus and Georg V, and much of the present contentrelates to music in the Hanoverian court through the mid-nineteenth century. While most materials date circa 1770-1870, a few items extend this span fromthe seventeenth through the mid-twentieth century.

Title:
Viotti correspondence, ca. 1793-ca. 1822.
The collection consists of 3 undated letters and 12 dated letters from Viotti (1801-1821), all in French ; 20 undated and 34 dated letters (1793-1822) to Viotti and several others from various correspondents, chiefly in French with several letters in English or Italian. The earliest dated letter (1793) is from Pugnani. Muzio Clementi, Johann Dussek, and Ferdinando Pae̋r are represented by one letter each. Two unsigned notes are attributed to Mme. de Staël, and 2 unsigned letters, to Stéphanie Félicité Genlis, the author of La duchesse de La Vallière. One letter is signed "Albertine de Staël" (duchesse de Broglie). Several items in 1821 relate to Viotti's having been named Chevalier de l'Ordre royal de la Légion d'honneur. Many letters are from and to the Chinnery family with little musical content. Viotti often signed letters "Amico" or "L'amico."

The archives consist primarily of music (both manuscript and printed), correspondence, photographs, sound recordings, books, newspaper clippings, printed programs, drawings, and engravings. They span years from the Middle Ages to the present, and include documents of composers, musicians, and literary figures, among others. The music in the collection includes holograph scores or sketches, both published and unpublished, as well as a number of copyists' and printed scores, transcriptions, and arrangements by composers and musicians such as Beethoven, Bloch, Brahms, Chopin, Franck, Mendelssohn, Puccini, Rimsky-Korsakov, Schoenberg, Webern, and many others. Also included is historically important correspondence, such as letters of Metastasio and Handel. [Bound set of piano music], 1786-1802.
One of the few items of music in the Edgeworth family library, a third of which is now held at UCLA. This vol. is comprised of piano music or parts (all engraved and all [but one] published in London) gathered together by its original owner, Henrica Broadhurst, whose maiden name can be found in gilt on the red leather onlay in the center of the binding's cover and whose married name ("Mrs. C[harles] Sneyd Edgeworth" [wife of the 5th child of Richard Edgeworth's 3rd wife) is inked at the top of the free endleaf. (Another pencilled note is given below this name: "Lent to Lucy J[ane] Edgeworth [the 4th child of Richard's 4th wife], Aug. 1828"). Some of the pieces in the vol. are for piano solo, while the titles of some of the others indicate that there are also parts for other instruments, either as full partner in the accompaniments or "ad libitum" or "obligés". No other parts have been bound into this vol. and none of the missing parts have been found in UCLA's Edgeworth holdings. However, some pencilled music notation found over the piano part in the 1st sonata of the Kozeluch--presumably one of the obbligato lines--provides an indication that the parts had originally been owned by Henrica. (Please note that page nos. in the contents note for this record are for the piano parts only.)

Memoranda for musical articles to be furnished to a new edition of the Cyclopaedia of Chambers, 1801.
Manuscript, in a single hand, of notes for articles Burney planned to contribute to Chambers' Cyclopaedia of Arts and Sciences. His notes, organized in alphabetical order, include definitions of musical terms as "Mordante," Semitones," and "Discords," often illustrated with musical notation, as well as commentaries on composers such as Handel and Haydn. He writes of Haydn, "Clementi, now at Vienna, writes word to his house in Cheapside that Haydn has left his faculties, and is grown quite childish!"
