Italian composer.
Italian song composer and singing teacher.
"The firm of Ricordi was founded in Milan in 1808 by Giovanni Ricordi (1785-1853); it was directed from 1853 to 1888 by his son Tito (1811-1888), from 1888 to 1912 by Tito’s son Giulio (1840-1912) and from 1912 to 1919 by Giulio’s son Tito (1865-1933). The firm was managed from 1919 to 1940 jointly by Renzo Valcarenghi and Carlo Clausetti, from 1940 to 1944 by Valcarenghi and Alfredo Colombo and from 1944 to 1952 by Colombo, Eugenio Clausetti and Camillo Ricordi. In 1952 it became a limited company, under the presidency first of Colombo, then of Guido Valcarenghi (from 1961), Carlo Origoni (from 1976), Gianni Babini (from 1982) and Guido Rignano (from 1988 to 1995). In June 1995 the company merged with BMG Ariola forming a new company BMG Ricordi S.p.a., of which Casa Ricordi is a division managed by Mimma Guastoni."
"During his first decade in business Giovanni Ricordi issued an average of 30 publications a year; in his second the yearly average was about 300. This expansion was largely the result of a succession of contracts starting from December 1814, which he won as prompter and exclusive copyist to La Scala, giving him the right to publish the music performed there; in 1825 he purchased their entire musical archives. In 1816 he had a similar contract as copyist to the Teatro Re, and in the 1830s and 1840s concluded highly favourable agreements with the opera houses of Venice and Naples. By the end of 1837 he had not only purchased the stock and plates of Ferdinando Artaria but was able to boast more than 10,000 publications, the exclusive rights to operas written for Milan and Naples, an archive of 1800 autograph manuscripts and a branch in Florence."
"In the entire history of music publishing there has been no other firm that through its own efforts, astuteness, initiative and flair has achieved a position of dominance such as Ricordi enjoyed in Italy in the 19th century, nor of power such as it has been able to maintain (on account of its rights on Verdi’s and Puccini’s operas) in the 20th." -- Richard Macnutt.

Title:
Annie Schletter papers 1757-1937
Correspondence, writings, printed ephemera, and photographs related to Annie Schletter and her family. Correspondence consists of letters to Annie Schletter, Pauline Schletter, Percy Schletter, and others, including Adrian Boult and Rosetta Phillips. Letters to Annie Schletter, many brief notes, largely relate to theater in London. Her correspondents include Margot Asquith, Adrian Boult, Ernest Coquelin, F. Paolo Tosti, Oscar Wilde, and Charles Wyndham. Correspondence also includes two letters from Georgina Weldon to Pauline Schletter, one written from Halloway Gaol and another enclosing 12 photographs taken in South Africa. Writings include several manuscript poems addressed to Rosetta Phillips, a typescript poem, "National Rat Week," by Osbert Sitwell, and a typescript essay by Margot Asquith describing a visit to Spain. Printed ephemera includes theater programs for performances at the Reform Club, Savoy Theatre, Windsor Castle, and other venues, as well as an invitation and prayer from "Her Majesty's Jubilee Thanksgiving Service." Title:
A.P. Schmidt Company archives, 1869-1958 (bulk 1895-1920).
The A.P. Schmidt Company archives contains music, correspondence, business and financial records, and related documents. These materials provide a detailed look at the management, daily operations, and history of the Schmidt firm. In the music series, which contains manuscripts and some printed music and is the largest part of the collection, are examples of music composed by Americans at the turn of the twentieth century and selected for publication by Schmidt. The majority of the music in the collection is in autograph form; some are holographs in the hand of the composer and many are the work of Schmidt company editors and arrangers. It is from these manuscripts that the Schmidt company prepared its publications. The music in the collection is principally for voice, chorus or piano, with some examples of large-scale orchestral music as well. It should be noted that none of the manuscripts of Edward MacDowell, one of Schmidt's most important composers, accompanied the collection to the Library of Congress. It may be assumed that after MacDowell's death, most of his manuscripts were returned to his widow, Marian MacDowell (see the Edward and Marian MacDowell Collection). Among the major correspondents in the collection are Edward Ballantine, Florence Newell Barbour, Floy Bartlett, Mrs. H.H.A. Beach, Robert Braine, Gena Branscombe, F. Leslie Calver,Rosseter G. Cole, Mabel Daniels, Roland Diggle, G. A. Grant-Schaefer, Cora W. Jenkins, Boris Levenson, Marian MacDowell, John W. Metcalf, T. Tertius Noble, Mari Paldi, Anna Priscilla Risher, Thomas Tapper, and George Woodhouse. Other notable correspondents include Paul Ambrose, Willi Apel, J. Saying it seems impossible that they have been such close neighbors and have never seen one another, suggesting that, Finchley Road not being the English Channel, it has certainly not been fear of crossing it that has kept Tosti on the banks, nor Bennett, the brave sailor, concluding that it must be Tosti's fear of speaking English badly and Bennett's fear of hearing Tosti speak French, recommending the Piano Sonata of Carlo Albanesi, asking Bennett to write about it if he agrees with Tosti's opinion of it, etc.
