Evans, John H., 1824-ca. 1896. Reminiscences of olden times: Manuscript, [ca. 1895].
Title:
Reminiscences of olden times: Manuscript, [ca. 1895].
Reminiscence, ca. 1895, in which Evans includes some family genealogical material, especially about his grandfather's move to and experiences in the Mississippi Territory from 1809 forward, farming and the Creek nation, including the effects of the Fort Mims, Ala., massacre, and the subsequent fighting. He also discusses Sam Dale, who later became a friend of Evans father, and who confirmed J.F.H. Claiborne's account of Dale's exploits. Evans also discusses attending a mixed school, at which both Choctaw Indians and whites attended, at Emmaus, Clarke Co., Miss., in the 1830's, the Indian removal at about the same time, early churches in the area, and their ministers, and the effect of the Second Great Awakening in the 1830's on religion, his low opinion of New Englanders as money-grubbers, especially as related to their participation in the slave trade and subsequent participation in abolitionism when slavery proved unprofitable in the North. He also traces evangelicalism by New Englanders in China in the 1880's and 1890's to the same profit motive. Also discussed was the mail service and cost of postage, and the conviction and hanging of a white who murdered a black, as well as the common use of whipping and branding to punish minor offenders in the 1820's-1840's period.

Albert J. Pickett papers, 1779-1904
Title:
Albert J. Pickett papers, 1779-1904
The Albert J. Pickett Papers form approximately one-half of the Pickett Family Papers, LPR185. The History of Alabama series is the largest series within the Albert J. Pickett Papers, and it contains letters and manuscripts Pickett received from numerous prominent individuals in the course of writing his book. Some people sent Pickett their reminiscences of major events, while a few sent Pickett documents from the late 1700s and early 1800s. The Creek Indian War of 1813-1814 is particularly well-documented. Many of the letters advised Pickett of potential sources of information. Most of the letters and manuscripts were bound together in two volumes by Pickett. This series also includes drafts of the book. The correspondence series contains letters from Pickett to family members, chiefly his wife. Several of the letters were written in 1851 when he travelled to New York and Charleston to arrange the publication of the History of Alabama. The scrapbook, clippings, and speeches series contains a scrapbook assembled by Pickett of articles he wrote and articles about his History of Alabama. Most of the clippings and speeches not in his scrapbook are transcriptions.

Title:
Public information subject files - Alabamians at war, [ca. 1780]-[ca. 1980].
The public information subject file - Alabamians at war contains various records which document the participation of Alabamians in various wars. The information was compiled by ADAH staff, and includes primary and secondary material. Included is information on the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, 1st and 2nd Creek Wars, the Seminole Wars, the Texas Revolution, the War with Mexico, the Spanish-American War, World War I, World War II, the Korean Conflict and Vietnam. Compiled information concerning the Civil War is found in a separate file (public information subject files - Civil War and Reconstruction). Included are clippings, compiled information about people and events, brochures, reference correspondence, photocopies and transcripts of original documents including muster rolls, and various printed materials. The War of 1812 and 1st Creek War are well documented. Included is information concerning famous individuals such as Andrew Jackson and Sam Dale and information on less well known soldiers. Of particular interest is a photocopy and transcript of the Mexican War company book of James Erby, which describes the movements of Co. B, 1st Alabama Battalion. A large portion of this file documents U.S. involvement in World War I. Because there was no National Archives in 1917-1918, ADAH director Thomas M. Owen actively collected material to document this war. These files consist of subject files, pamphlets, newspapers and periodicals, and German memorabilia that was sent to Owen by Alabama servicemen. Photostat copies of county draft lists are included also. There are service cards on Alabamians who served in the war that were compiled by the ADAH staff for use in various projects. Most prominent among these projects was the uncompleted Gold Star Book - a tribute to Alabama soldiers who lost their lives during the conflict or were decorated for their service. The Gold Star files contain biographical sketches of the servicemen, and often, photographs and correspondence from family members. Information on the U.S. 167th Infantry Unit is also prominent throughout the files.
