Archie Ammons papers, 1945-2010.
Title:
Archie Ammons papers, 1945-2010.
Primarily incoming correspondence from students and teaching colleagues; fellow literary figures; and family members. The letters frequently enclose poetry for review; snapshots of family members; and photos of Ammons and other literary figures. The papers provide sources for the study of modern American poetry, including the publication of poetry in various journals. Some letters discuss the publication of Ammons' own books of poetry; others highlight activities of small presses. Letters and records of writers' conferences underscore Ammons' role in Southern regional literature. Also, material detailing his role in Cornell's Department of English and its creative writing program.

Burgess, Anthony, 1917-1993. Anthony Burgess Papers, 1956-1997.
Title:
Anthony Burgess Papers, 1956-1997.
Typed and holograph manuscripts, sheet music, correspondence, clippings, financial statements, contracts and legal documents, appointment books, notes, magazines, and photographs document the life and work of Anthony Burgess from 1956 to 1997, with the bulk of the materials dating from the 1970s through the 1980s, his most productive years. The bulk of the papers comprise manuscript materials found in the Works series. Most of these materials are fair copy typescripts or photocopies of various drafts of novels, articles, reviews, and musical works. While there are no manuscripts for Burgess's earliest works, including A Clockwork Orange, and very little for his Enderby books, several of his later works such as Earthly Powers, A Dead Man in Deptford, You've Had Your Time, Mozart and the Wolf Gang, and Kingdom of the Wicked are well represented. Correspondence is found throughout the papers, but is concentrated in the Correspondence series. Letters in Series IV. Subject Files relate to specific topics. Correspondence in the Works series primarily documents the development of the particular piece to which it relates, as does correspondence in Series III. Contracts and Royalty Statements.
ArchivalResource: 136 boxes (57.12 linear feet), 15 oversize boxes, 1 oversize folder, 2 galley folders.

Ammons, A. R., 1926-2001. Archie Ammons papers, 1945-2010.
Title:
Archie Ammons papers, 1945-2010.
Primarily incoming correspondence from students and teaching colleagues; fellow poets and other literary figures; and a few family members. The letters frequently enclose chapbooks and typescript or manuscript poetry for review; snapshots of family members; and formal and informal photographs of Ammons and other literary figures. Envelopes frequently bear Ammons's draft replies to letters received as well as draft poetry, lecture notes, and other matter. The papers provide sources for the study of modern American poetry, including the publication of poetry in journals such as The Hudson Review, The Manhattan Review, and The Bluefish; and in such Southern literary journals as The Pembroke Magazine and The North Carolina Literary Review. Letters from W. W. Norton & Company discuss the publication of Ammons' own books of poetry, while others highlight activities of such small presses as Palaemon Press Limited and the Jackpine Press. Letters and records of writers conferences sponsored at the Reynolds Homestead Learning Center in Critz, Va., underscore Ammons' role in Southern regional literature. Letters, departmental memoranda, and "Recommendations" files detail his role in Cornell's Department of English and its creative writing program. And letters from 1981 and later record his relationship with the MacArthur Foundation. Also included are sixty-eight journals, in which Ammons interfiled journal entries, poems, and correspondence. They detail Ammons' growth as a poet, and his relationship with his mentor Josephine Miles and editor John Benedict. Literary manuscripts include published and unpublished poetry. Audio and video tapes, including tapes of Ammons' reading his own poetry and "Poetry for A.R. Ammons," a videotape from Ammonsfest, Cornell University, April 3, 1998, a celebration of A.R. Ammons. Journal #1, Journal (letters to Phyllis) 1947-1949, photographs: Archie and son John, Archie and grandson, Archie. Correspondence, 1997-1998; 25 watercolor paintings dating from the late 1970s to the late 1980s. Major correspondents include John G. Benedict, James Bertolino, Philip E. Booth, Frederick Buell, David Burak, James Burgess, Kathryn Stripling Byer, Stephen Cushman, Ephim Fogel, Kenneth Frazelle, Philip H. Erikson, Erik H. (Erik Homburger), 1902-1994. Erik H. and Joan M. Erikson papers, 1925-1985 (inclusive) 1960-1980 (bulk).
Title:
Erik H. and Joan M. Erikson papers, 1925-1985 (inclusive) 1960-1980 (bulk).
The papers contain correspondence, manuscripts, subject files, medical records (including notes, sketches, photographs and color slides), clippings, audio tapes of lectures, and awards. The papers also concern the work of Joan M. Erikson. The collection spans the American years (little pre-dates their 1933 arrival in the U.S.) and includes materials relating to all aspects of their careers. The correspondence section is primarily letters with friends and colleagues from the psychoanalytic/academic community; there are only a few family letters. There are lengthy files with his publisher, W.W. Norton & Company. Erikson's connection to the Austen Riggs Center (Stockbridge, Mass.) figures prominently in both the correspondence and in the clinical sections of the papers. Correspondents include: Peter Blos, Anna Freud, Robert P. Knight, Robert Jay Lifton, Margaret Mead, Lois Barclay Murphy, Benjamin Spock and numerous others. Of particular note in the composition section are the manuscripts of the various lecture series he delivered such as: lectures in India (1960s and 1970s), Gauss Seminars at Princeton University (1969), Godkin Lectures at Harvard University, Jefferson lectures for the NEH (1973), and Einstein lectures for a symposium in Jerusalem (1979). Research materials relating to cross-cultural studies of children, identity, human development, life cycle, and play assessment abound throughout. Although there are many manuscripts of his published works, there are no manuscripts for his major works: Childhood and Society, Young Man Luther or Gandhi's Truth. There are only a few items relating to his years as a University Professor at Harvard University. The "Compositions of a clinical nature" section contains observation notes, photographs, slides and sketches from various time periods including: Institute of Human Relations at Yale University (1930s); University of California--Berkeley (1940s); Austen Riggs Center (1950s-1970s); and reserch projects in India and Pakistan, the Charleston Playhouse, the Manhattan Country Day School and the Crow Indians (1960s-1970s), and many others.

Title:
Ecco Press records 1963-1996
Ecco Press was an independent small-trade publisher known for presenting distinguished new work in international poetry and fiction writing through its books and its journal Antaeus, and for reissuing neglected classics in a variety of fields, including travel and food writing. Daniel Halpern (b. 1945) started Antaeus in 1970 with the help of Paul Bowles. His search for financial backing for Antaeus led to the creation of Ecco Press in 1971 with co-founder and publisher Drue Heinz. Heinz retired in 1991, transferring ownership of Ecco Press to Halpern, its editor-in-chief. Ecco Press remained an independent firm, although affiliated with publishers Viking Press and W.W. Norton & Company for sales and distribution, until its acquisition by HarperCollins in 1999. The Ecco Press records contain correspondence, memoranda, administrative and financial records, typescripts, galleys, page proofs, bound books and periodicals, photographs, jacket art, posters, a sound recording and computer data storage that document the founding and day-to-day operations of the press. The records also reflect the personal life and career of Daniel Halpern as an editor, poet, teacher, anthologist, and prominent literary figure, as well as such literary activities as the National Poetry Series which Halpern ran out of the Ecco Press offices. Halpern's papers contain correspondence, diaries, notebooks, writings, subject files and academic, financial and real estate papers.
