With this autograph letter Brassington evidently enclosed a prospectus for his projected book, Historic bookbindings in the Bodleian Library, Oxford, and asked the Grolier Club to subscribe to the costs of publication. (The club did acquire a copy of the book, published in 1891.) He asked also if the club would be interested in reproducing three seventeenth century tracts published in England that relate to the Virginia and Massachusetts colonies. The club declined to do so.

This collection contains Smith's correspondence and records, 1887-1931. Several letters were addressed to his daughter and assistant, Amy G. Smith ( - ) following his death in 1929. The majority of correspondents were clients ordering book-plates to be designed and engraved by Smith in Boston. Their letters contain detailed design suggestions, drawings, and questions concerning projected costs and printing procedures. Smith's clients included several notable book and engravings collectors, such as Joseph Manuel Andreini (1850-1932) and William Loring Andrews (1837-1920) of New York, Susan Janney Allen ( - ) of Moorestown, N.J., Ruthven Deane (1851-1934) of Chicago, Ill., and Harry Worcester Smith (1865-1945) and Dr. Charles Lemuel Nichols (1851-1929) of Worcester, Mass. Also numbered among Smith's clients were many college libraries, public libraries, historical and research societies, publishing houses, bookstores, and collectors' clubs, such as the Club of Odd Volumes and the Society of Iconophiles. The collection also consists of business correspondence from editors of journals concerning publication of Smith's book-plate lists and designs, e.g.--Harry Alfred Fowler (1889- ), editor of The Ex Libran and The Miscellany of Kansas City, Mo. Box 1 contains a record book kept by Smith with brief entries describing correspondence concerning book-plate orders received by him during the period 1899 to 1928.

Fourteen ALS written by Halleck to Andrews from November 1865 to June 1866 concerning Andrews' plan to publish a handsome subcription edition of Fanny as a way of raising money to assist Halleck. In the letters Halleck supplies information about topical references in the poem for the "Notes" included in this edition. The 1866 edition was privately printed by Andrews in an edition of 70 copies, one of which (no. 24, the gift of Henry W. Poor) accompanies the collection of letters. Two additional letters in the sequence appear to not be included in this collection.

Correspondence and clippings of articles by Andrews and others concerning his interest in rare books and his publishing activities. Correspondents include individuals, libraries, and his publishers, including Dodd, Mead and Co. and the journals The Bookman and Modern art. Also included are three books privately published by Andrews in the 1860s and two written or compiled by him, as well as book announcements and advertisements for his own books and those of others; Library of Congress copyright certificates for his books; and miscellaneous meeting announcements. Also ALS and signed carte de visite from French artist J.G. Vibert and cartes de viste from three other 19th century French artists. Two resolutions on his death, hand lettered and bound, are included: one from the Continental Assurance Company and the other from the Society of Iconophiles. A copy of the Poems of Fitz-Greene Halleck (1847) bound in red morocco with Andrew's bookplate is of special interest, as Andrews gave personal support to Halleck during his later years. A collection of twelve re-strikes from the of the original copper plates for engravings of the twelve apostles by artist Hans Sebald Beham, given to Andrews by John Woodbury of Boston, completes the collection.

Van Benthem ., 1818). According to the note at the end of the manuscript, he Murhphy finished "this translation November 29, 1840. It has been made without any knowledge whatever of the language and the Dictionary alone being my Assistant. My first attempt upon the Dutch language & necessarily imperfect."
