Edwin Davis French (1851-1906) was an engraver of silver and copper, famous for the bookplates he designed and engraved. Ill health had forced him to leave Brown University in his sophomore year, and two years later he began working as a silver engraver for the Whiting Manufacturing Company of North Attleboro, Mass. Although he spent almost twenty-five years with the Whiting Company, his interest in graphic art encouraged him to take up copper engraving. He had little formal education and began bookplate engraving almost by accident. He engraved only a few plates outside this field, the most notable of which are illustrations for Andre's Journal and a series of old New York views. He was interested in artificial languages, especially Volapük and Esperanto, and was active in Volapük societies.
