In (2), he compliments Kean on his "tremendous success" in Richard the Second. In (3) and (4), he voices his regret in hearing of Kean's withdrawal from management of the Royal Princess's Theatre. (4) he quotes Marc Antony "When comes such another?"

(2) indicates that the Rev. Derwent Coleridge saw Kean's Lear and was "delighted beyond measure with [Kean's] 'most masterly performance.'" Address on item appears as: 6 The Grange, Brompton.

Miscellaneous notes on various subjects including the venality of the stage, much of the invective directed against Garrick [1754?-1760?]; an excerpt from Macklin's defense in his suit [against Colman, 1774?], written on the back of poems (all entitled Impromptu on seeing Mr. Macklin in Macbeth) about Macklin copied from the St. James's Chronicle, October 26, 1773; a draft of a bill introduced in the Court of Chancery in Ireland in Macklin v. Robert Owenson, manager of the City Theatre, Fishamble St., Dublin, February 26, 1785, concerning Owenson's production of Love a la mode without Macklin's permission. Memoranda and anecdotes of Macklin, 1775-1776, with a note by Charles Farley, and another by D[rinkwater] Meadows, 1859, that this was bought at Isaac Reed's sale, presumably by Field; notes on the history of England and of the theatre since 1660, many concerning Garrick and Macklin, ca. 1785; notes for Macklin's play "Kill or be killed," written on the blank spaces of a letter to Macklin from George Mattocks, September 17, [1774?], inviting him to play in Liverpool; and a ticket for [Covent Garden], March 22, 1787.

Meadows expresses that his desire to be in a larger company "in order to be higher in [his] profession" and that he hopes for an engagement for "second old men with the Frenchmen, Jews and Scotchmen, and any other respectable low comedy business." Signed "H. Drinkwater Meadows." Annotations on fol. 2v, in another hand, reference Richard and Shylock. Addressed to Elliston at Stratford Place, Oxford Road, London.

The letter to her daughter Mary, no. 19, ca. 1870 gives an account of C.J. Kean's first appearance in 1827, and of his mother. The letter to Sol Smith (41) 1848, gives a survey of the theatrical world. 2 letters to Martha Tree, nos. 45-46, include a note of their mother Mrs. Tree. All the letters to [Edward] Saker (85-92) concern his borrowing of Charles Kean's prompt book, music score and book of photographs of The Winter's Tale for his production of the play in 1876.

(5) refers to the "disgusting conduct of Mr. Ryder." Laments that this incident occured so close to Kean's withdrawal from management of the Princess's theatre. (6), to Mrs. Kean, is undated but refers to their professional "breaking up," a reference to the end of Charles Kean's management of the Princess's theatre. In (7), also to Mrs. Kean, he refers to the death of Charles Kean's mother and makes reference to the fifth commandment. (8), to Miss Chapman, is a letter of condolence upon the death of Charles Kean. Most letters written from The Grange, Brompton, with the exception of (3), from Stoke Devonport.
