This series consists of a list of the members of the Constitutional Convention, who were called together to form the constitution of the new state of Ala. in 1819. Included are the names of the members, the names of the counties that they are representing, the names of the president and secretary of the convention. The president of the convention was John Williams Walker, who served as a member of the Legislature of the Ala. Territory and who became the first U.S. Senator from Ala.

This collection contains 143 pen and ink drawings, roughly measuring 8 x 10. The subjects depicted include prominent Alabamians such as Braxton Bragg Comer, William J. Samford, and Dr. Peter Bryce, and important historical events such as the Battle of Horseshoe Bend, the running of the first electric street car and the founding of various societies. The drawings run the gamut of Ala. history, beginning with prehistory and coming up to modern times.

Title: Constitution of the State of Alabama, 1819.

The 1819 Constitution of the State of Ala., described by Malcolm C. McMillan in a 1973 Report of the Constitutional Commission as the "Frontier Constitution of 1819," was drafted and approved on 1819 Aug. 2. The 1819 Constitution included the following Articles: Preamble, Declaration of Rights, Distribution of Powers, Legislative Dept., Executive Dept., Militia, Judicial Dept., Education, Impeachment, Taxation, and Slavery. This document discusses such issues as the establishment of the State Bank and its Branches, encouragement of education, divorce and how it could be granted, the process of electing the governor, the process of legislative bills, and the duties of the House and Senate. The last two pages have the signatures of the forty-four delegates, including the president of the convention and the secretary of the convention. The Constitution of 1819, according to Malcolm C. McMillan, contained no property, educational, taxpaying, or other qualifications for voting. Therefore, it provided for universal white manhood suffrage, and was in that sense noted for its democracy. The document is written on twenty-six sheets of parchment, each attached to the sheet below it by blue grosgrain silk ribbon and red sealing wax. The document extends to approximately thirty-one feet in length. It is approximately 3.75 inches in diameter and 19 inches in length, when rolled. An eighth of an inch of polyethylene has been rolled around the Constitution to add some cushion and support to the document within the container.

This collection consists of miscellaneous items relating to the Miss. and Ala. territories and their citizens. Includes powers of attorney, newspaper articles, correspondence, a letter of recommendation, an affidavit, and a speech. Consists of miscellaneous legal papers, 1807-1817; correspondence concerning Judge Harry Toulmin, 1819; miscellaneous records relating to military and Indian affairs, 1806-1807; letters from John Williams Walker to James Monroe and John Quincy Adams, 1818-1819; and miscellaneous newspaper articles, 1817-1818. Included are letters from Edwin Lewis to various U.S. government officials complaining of the conduct of Judge Toulmin; a transcript of William Weatherford's surrender speech to Andrew Jackson at Tohopeka (Horseshoe Bend), 1814 Mar. 18; transcripts of U.S. congressional records concerning Indian affairs in the area and letters from John Williams Walker to U.S. officials concerning actions of the Ala. territorial General Assembly.

Tait family. Papers, 1786-1899.

Title: Papers, 1786-1899.

These papers, 1786-1899, contain genealogical materials; legal records of various types, especially deeds and indentures involving land; letters; correspondence; financial records such as receipts, accounts, notes, memorandum books, and subscriptions; journals (notebooks); electoral records; architectural records; and printed materials. The largest series in these papers include legal records, 1798-1865, .3 cubic ft.; the Charles Tait papers, 1791-1835, .7 cubic ft.; and the James A. Tait papers, 1807-1849 and n.d., .6 cubic ft. These series comprise about three-fourths of the collection. The legal records contain not only records related to land transactions, but wills, slave records, contracts with freedmen, and other documents. The Charles Tait papers, 1791-1836, contain correspondence and letters, general; business letters, and financial records. Major subjects discussed in the correspondence and letters include U.S., Ga., and Ala., politics and government; family matters, the Lea-Conrad scientific controversay; Ala.--description and travel; buying land and agriculture in Ga. and Ala., especially growing cotton; foreign relations; and many others. Major correspondents included William H. Crawford, John Williams Walker, William Wyatt Bibb, John C. Calhoun, Isaac Lea, T.A. Conrad, Jeremiah Austill, James A. Tait, Elizabeth C. Tait, and many others. His memorandum books and financial records are of interest also, especially his accounts with Jeremiah Austill, George Johnston, and various banks. The James A. Tait papers, 1807-1849, contain letters, business and personal; writings; and financial records. Major subjects discussed in the letters include: family matters; the War of 1812; foreign relations generally; buying land and raising crops in Ala., especially cotton and corn; and many others. Major correspondents included Charles Tait, Sarah Tait, and Charles William Tait, and the firms of Austill ? Broadnax, Newton, and Co.; and Harwell & Davis. In his 1813 journal are described some of his experiences in the War of 1812, and the 1831-1842 journal contains notations on various topics, including shipping costs, cotton accounts, slave purchases, and genealogy of Afro-Americans. Financial records are interesting and detailed, especially the accounts and larger receipts, and the steamboat accounts and receipts. In those accounts are reflected Tait's business transactions, especially the shipping and selling of his cotton crop through cotton brokers. Another series of special interest is the Elizabeth C. Tait papers, 1813-1845, which contains letters and accounts and receipts. Major subjects discussed include the migration of the Taits to Ala., and other matters related to family life; the War of 1812; Ala.--social life and customs; and many other subjects. Primary correspondents include Charles Tait, James A. Tait, and Elizabeth's sisters and brother Sarah Ann Goode Coleman, Rebecca S. Goode, and Sidney N. Goode; as well as her son, Charles W. Tait. Another two series of interest, though both are small, are the Charles W. Tait papers, 1818-1865; and the James G. Tait papers, 1856-1899, both of which contain letters on finances and U.S. history, Civil War, 1861-1865, among other subjects.

Title: Appointments files, 1821-1825.

Correspondence consisting of letters and petitions concerning civil and military appointments, commissions, elections and resignations. Included are letters requesting commissions, letters of recommendation and letters alleging fraud in local elections. Most of the correspondence relates to positions in local government, though a few concern positions in Mobile Bay, such as pilot and harbor warden, and various other state jobs. The letters of resignation are from county and local officials, state legislators and state appointed officials. Often the reason for resigning is stated in the letter. Notable resignations which appear are from Harry Toulmin and John Williams Walker.

General records of William Wyatt Bibb, including correspondence (official and private), petitions and a few financial records. Several items are from pre-territorial dates. The bulk of the records is correspondence and most is addressed to Bibb in his capacity as territorial Governor or Commander-in-Chief of the territorial militia. Subjects discussed include Indian affairs, finances of the new territory, allegations of corruption among local officials, the French colony at Demopolis, the organization of militia units and the general functioning of the territorial government. Prominent correspondencts include Bolling Hall, Felix Grundy, John Williams Walker, Thomas Eastin, Samuel Dale and William Crawford.

Title: John Williams Walker Letters, 1805-1809

Consists of typed copies of letters written by John Williams Walker two his brother at two points in his life. The first group of letters date from 1805-1807 when he attended Princeton University as an undergraduate. The second set of letters is from a later period 1808-1809 when Walker was traveling westward from Charleston, South Carolina to the Mississippi Territory. The collection also contains an index to the letters and a brief biography of Walker.
