The official general correspondence of Ala. Governor Israel Pickens documents the daily activity of the office of Governor, 1821-1825. Included are incoming and outgoing letters, petitions, reports, bonds, accounts, oaths, certificates, authorizations and statements. The correspondence deals with a wide variety of topics including the state's financial situation, banking, river and harbor navigation, publications from other states, the militia and arms supplies, salt springs and university lands. Correspondents include John William Walker and William Rufus King, U.S. Senators; William Perry, surveyor of Ala. rivers; Jesse Beene, state agent for the leasing of salt springs in Monroe; and the Planters' and Merchants' Bank of Huntsville, Tombeckbe Bank and the Bank of Mobile. Of particular interest are letters, 1825 June 6 and 1825 Sept. 24, between Pickens and William Carroll, Governor of Tenn., concerning the possibility of building a canal to connect the Hiwassee and Coosa Rivers and in the vicinity of Muscle Shoals on the Tenn. River; a letter, 1825 May 14, from Creek Indian supporters of Chief William McIntosh describing McIntosh's murder and asking for increased protection for the tribe; and an undated report on the condition of the Washington Co. courthouse. Other items of interest from 1825 concern arrangements for the visit of General Marie Joseph Paul, Marquis de Lafayette to Ala. Included are three letters from General J.B. Chambers who was to escort Lafayette from Line Creek, Ala., the western boundary of the Creek Indian nation, to Montgomery, Ala. Most of the letters discuss Lafayette's expected time of arrival and his trip through the Creek nation. Also present are several documents relating to the expenses incurred during the visit and typed transcripts of documents in private hands. Several documents concerning the Vine and Olive colony can also be found among Pickens' papers. Included in these papers are a certificate dated 1817 assigning land to John (Jean) Marie Chapron, and a certificate dated 1818 assigning land to Gaspard Bonnot. Two of the documents concerning the Vine and Olive Colony are written in French.
