Title: French Revolution military scenes. [ca. 1792]-1893.

Consists mainly of battle scenes, including depictions of the battles of Valmy, Jemmapes, Fleurus, Neerwinden, Arcole, and Lodi, the siege of Lille, the attack on Nantes by Vendéan forces in June 1793, the recapture of Toulon from counterrevolutionaries in December 1793, and the pacification of the Vendée in 1795. Also included are scenes of military action against crowds in Paris, such as the violence of August 10, 1792, the September massacres of 1792, the Marquis de Lafayette giving the order to fire on the crowd at the Champs de Mars, and Napoleon directing cannon to fire on the crowd on October 5, 1795. In addition, the collection includes numerous prints of scenes from Napoleon's Egyptian campaign, including the battles of the Pyramids, Aboukir (battle of the Nile), and Mount Tabor. Caricatures, portraits, and depictions of battles and other political events, focussing mainly on the French Revolution and Napoleonic era, with some caricatures and portraits on subjects from the Restoration and later. Included are hand-colored political caricatures from the French Revolution, hand-colored German and French caricatures of Napoleon, and portraits of Jean Sylvain Bailly, Joseph Antoine Joachim Cérutti, Camille Desmoulins, the Marquis de Lafayette, Maximilien Robespierre, Jean-Paul Rabaut Saint Etienne, Saint-Just, and many other significant and lesser figures from the Revolution. Caricatures are nearly all anonymous. Portraits, scenes from the Revolution and Napoleonic battle scenes are by a variety of artists, including Denis Auguste Marie Raffet, Tony Johannot, Ary Scheffer, and Alfred Johannot; many are anonymous. Subjects include the Tennis Court Oath of June 1789; Honoré-Gabriel de Riquetti, comte de Mirabeau, giving a speech to the National Assembly in June of 1789; Georges Jacques Danton giving a speech to the Cordeliers political club; the arrest of Louis XVI at Varennes; the trial of Louis XVI; the assassination of Jean Paul Marat; revolutionary festivals; prisoners being summoned to execution; Danton, Jean Sylvain Bailly, and Camille Desmoulins going to the guillotine; Jean-Lambert Tallien speaking before the Revolutionary Tribune on July 27, 1794, the day that Robespierre was overthrown; and Napoleon and Emmanuel Joseph Sieyès conferring before their coup d'état of November 9-10, 1799. Also included are illustrated lyrics to the songs Le Reveil du Peuple and Hymne à l'Etre Suprème. Many prints are anonymous.
