The collection consists of photocopies of correspondence, memoranda, clippings, teletypes/telegrams, excerpts from lab reports, an oral history interview with transcripts, and an investigative report concerning the February 17, 1947 lynching of Willie Earle. The files document the Federal Bureau of Investigation's involvement in the case and documentation of its coverage in the media. Professor Will Gravely obtained the bulk of this material under the Freedom of Information Act in 2001. Prior to obtaining these files, Gravely conducted an interview with Senator Strom Thurmond concerning the incident. Thurmond was Governor of South Carolina in 1947 when Mr. Earle was killed. The interview took place in Washington, DC on August 21, 1989. The investigative report includes a synopsis of the case; report on the crime scene investigation, preliminary investigation and interviews; copies of statements by suspects, divided into those who did and did not confess to the lynching; copies of corroborating interviews. Gravely created an item level log for this material and divided it into three sections with the first section being divided into two parts. These files include documents that have redactions and can be compared with similar files found in Mss 156, Alan Schaffer Collection of F.B.I. files of the Willie Earle Case that he obtained in the 1980s. There is material related to the defense lawyers John Bolt Culbertson and Thomas Wofford as well as J. Edgar Hoover's interest in the case.

Papers chiefly document Hemphill's service as a member of Congress and Federal District Court judge, 1964 to 1983. The papers are arranged in seven series: General, Judicial, Speeches, Topical Files, Writings, Photographs, and Clippings. General Papers, 1926 to 1983, consist primarily of correspondence; this series documents Hemphill's political campaigns in 1950 for Solicitor and 1956 for Congress; activities in Congress, 1957 to 1964; and his 1964 appointment to the bench and subsequent judicial career; also contains records relating to the Democratic Party in Chester, S.C., and elsewhere in S.C.; and letters and other papers documenting social events associated with hunting and fishing which provided Judge Hemphill and his friends and associates with opportunities for fellowship and recreation. Correspondents include Sol Blatt, Jr.; John Bolt Culbertson; Tom S. Gettys; Clement F. Haynsworth, Jr.; Olin D. Johnston; John F. Kennedy; Robert Kennedy; J. Robert Martin, Jr.; Julius B. "Bubba" Ness; Donald Russell, John Spratt, Strom Thurmond; John West, and others. Judicial Opinions, 1964 to 1979, consist of eight bound volumes. Speeches include the texts of speeches presented by Hemphill as well as programs for events at which Hemphill spoke. Topical Files contain Hemphill's military records and reflect activities in his native Chester County, S.C.; and elsewhere; topics include Chester High School; Civil Air Patrol, 1966-1977; an autobiography of Weston Carrier Cook; life at USC during the Great Depression, 1933-1937; files re U.S. Army Air Force, 1941-1945 (Hemphill volunteered as a Flying Cadet and served as instructor stationed at airfields in Texas training pilots on the B-24 Liberator bomber). Material relating to Hemphill's leadership in Purity Presbyterian Church (Chester, S.C.) includes Sunday School lesson plans and minutes of the Board of Deacons. Writings consist of articles and drafts of articles, chiefly reminiscences of his courtroom experiences. In a letter to Thomas Harrington Pope, 13 January 1975, regarding Pope's editorial comments on an article for The Transcript, Hemphill noted, "I have a number of stories written, in a notebook in Columbia, that I cannot publish, because they would offend the people who are living....If the Lord lets me live...I am going to retire at age 65 and then try to see if I can write." Other materials inlcude photographs, miscellany, clippings, and 9 scrapbook volumes.

Chiefly correspondence, speeches, and clippings from Ashmore's time in the U.S. House. Also included are records of his campaigns for office, 1935-1970, and work with the South Carolina Appalachian Council of Governments, 1970-1985. General correspondence includes both personal and public correspondence. Letters written to S.C. from Washington, D.C. reflect some private expressions of the pressures and frustrations of public service. Letters written during World War II describes Ashmore's experiences during his tour of duty in the Army Judge Advocate General Corps. Speeches, and copies of legislation sponsored by Robert Thomas Ashmore; records: House Subcommittee on Contested Elections, 1965-1968, in Minnesota, Arkansas, Indiana, Mississippi, and elsewhere; election campaigns, 1936-1970; his work in the passage of 1966 legislation that eliminated "two price cotton"; and South Carolina Appalachian Council of Governments, 1970-1985. Also includes topical files re communism and civil rights; clippings and photographs of Congressman Ashmore. Audiovisual materials include an audio tape containing a June 1966 CBS radio broadcast, Capitol Cloakroom, in which Ashmore is joined by fellow House Administration Committee member Charles E. Goodell to discuss a proposal from the President concerning campaign finance reform. Photographs from throughout Ashmore's private and political career are present. Of note are two photographs believed to have been taken in Greenville, S.C., showing President Lyndon B. Johnson on a campaign whistle-stop with Ashmore and South Carolina's senior senator, Olin D. Johnston.

The collection consists of photocopies of correspondence, memoranda, clippings, teletypes/telegrams, excerpts from the book The F.B.I. Story (by Don Whitehead, 1956) and the New Yorker (June 14, 1947), lab reports and an investigative report concerning the Willie Earle lynching and the F.B.I.'s involvement in the case. Also includes deleted page information sheets. Some of this material is sanitized, with the section of Freedom of Information and Privacy Act permitting sanitization often noted in the margin of the item. Most of the clippings are from Washington, D.C. and Greenville newspapers; clippings will often have passages concerning the F.B.I. underlined. The investigative report includes a synopsis of the case; report on the crime scene investigation, preliminary investigation and interviews; copies of statements by suspects, divided into those who did and did not confess to the lynching; copies of corroborating interviews; an auto grouping and movement survey; elimination and screening of suspects; and physical descriptions of the suspects. Some of the material in the collection concerns the F.B.I.'s displeasure over the tactics used by defense attorneys Thomas Wofford and John Bolt Culbertson, and include inquiries as to Culbertson's relationship with the C.I.O. In addition to the Willie Earle case, some of the material in this collection related to lynching in the South in general.

Collection contains campaign records from 1974, 1978, and 1980, but chiefly consists of clippings kept by Ravenel's 1974 campaign staff; arranged in three series: Personal Papers, Clippings and Audio-Visual Materials. Personal Papers mainly consist of campaign records, 1974, 1978, and 1980. Files include financial information, press releases and newsletters, publicity and voter research conducted by the Hart Research Association, Inc. for all campaigns. Campaign ads, bumper stickers, and other campaign paraphernalia are included in the publicity files. Also included in the personal papers are documents relating to the 1974 State Supreme Court case disputing Ravenel's residency. Clippings kept by Ravenel's 1974 campaign staff make up the bulk of the collection and offer a surprisingly detailed account of the election process, with extensive collection of articles from international, national, regional and local newspapers. Feature articles are included along with editorials and local level responses to the campaign. Independent and county newspapers are well represented. Topical clippings files were kept on major campaign opponents by Ravenel's office. Persons represented include: Maurice Bessinger, Carroll Campbell, John Bolt Culbertson, William Jennings Bryan Dorn, Peggy Jennings, James Edwards, Earle Morris, Jr., and Eugene "Nick" Zeigler.
