United States Congressman from South Carolina's 4th District, 1953-1969; member of House Administration Committee and Committee on the Judiciary; active in campaign reform and civil rights; chairman, 1970-1973, South Carolina Appalachian Council of Governments; member of the Greenville Jaycees, the State Junior Chamber of Commerce and the White Oak Baptist Church; prosecutor in the trial of persons charged with the lynching of Willie Earle.
