Osborne Family Papers, 1786-1968, 1880-1925

Title: Osborne Family Papers 1786-1968 1880-1925

Encompasses the records of three generations of the Osborne family of Auburn, N.Y. Thomas Mott Osborne, son of businessman David Munson Osborne, was associated with Democratic politics, philanthropy, and social reform, especially prison reform. He was a trustee and later president of the George Junior Republic in Freeville, New York. In 1913, he was appointed chairman of the New York State Commission on Prison Reform. His third son, Lithgow, served in the foreign service in Germany from 1914-1917, and later in Havana, Copenhagen, and Norway. He subsequently left government service to pursue a career in newspaper publishing with the Auburn Citizen-Advertiser. Collection includes correspondence (1812-1968); speeches (1895-1945); legal and financial papers (1786-1962); organizational records (1813-1967); memorabilia (1845-1965); diaries (1843-1946), and other material. The correspondence - over 150,000 items - includes letters of authors, bankers, businessmen, U.S. cabinet officers, civil servants, clergy, convicts, diplomats, educators, inventors, journalists, lawyers, legislators, musicians, politicians, publishers, and social reformers. Correspondence which is of most significant depth and duration includes that with Josephus Daniels, Charles Devens, Christian A. Herter, Louis M. Howe, Herbert H. Lehman, Lucretia Coffin Mott, George Foster Peabody, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Eleanor Roosevelt, Alfred E. Smith, Katrina Trask, and Oswald Garrison Villard.

Mainly family correspondence, scrapbooks (including one for Mary C.P. Herter's art work as a child), and photograph albums of American artists Albert and Adele McGinnis Herter, their son, Christian A. Herter, congressman, Massachusetts governor and U.S. secretary of state, and his wife Mary C. (Pratt). Other family members and close friends included in the collection are Everit A. Herter, Caroline Keck Herter Bridge; Bessie McGinnis Van Vorst and Lithgow Osborne. Collection includes some diaries of Mary C.P. Herter, including some kept as a child, and a typed transcript of the W.W.I. diary of Everit A. Herter, sergeant in Company A, 40th Engineers, camouflage. (Cont) Among the subjects covered are the portrait and mural painting careers of Albert, Adele and Everit A. Herter and the early life and diplomatic and political career of Christian A. Herter. Christian Herter's papers touch upon his years at Harvard, his foreign service stints in Germany, Belgium and Switzerland during W.W.I., the Paris Peace Conference, the U.S. Commerce Dept. under Herbert Hoover, and the American Relief Administration. Also included in the collection are small amounts of material on Herter's congressional career, 1943-53; his governorship, 1953-57; his service as U.S. under secretary of state (including engagement diaries for 1957-59) and secretary of state, 1959-61; and as U.S. special representative on trade negotiations, 1962-66.
