Accompanying the letterbook is a copy in Spanish, and translation, of the will, St. Louis, 1783, of Eugenio Pouré, attested by Pedro Oliver and others, transcribed November 15, 1859, from county records, St. Louis.

The records consist of correspondence, missionary reports, financial reports, pamphlets, and newspaper clippings. They primarily represent the central office of Corresponding Secretary and Assistant Treasurer and reflect both the domestic and foreign enterprises of the Union from 1862 to 1884. The records reflect most thoroughly the Union's domestic missions in Cincinnati and Louisville; the foreign missions in Italy, Mexico, and Chile, as well as the many and varied evangelical efforts in France; the reorganization of 1884; and the relationship of the AFCU with individual denominations and with other interdenominational benevolent societies.

Monroe writes to his daughter Eliza at school in Paris encouraging her to learn to play the harp, 1805; discusses her and his wife, Elizabeth's health and suggests they visit Stonehenge and Bristol, England, 1806. Monroe writes to William Clark introducing his brother, Joseph J. Monroe, who intends to settle in Missouri and practice law, 1820; and to Dr. Charles Worthington that Elizabeth Monroe is still ill and bleeding her hand did no good, 1824. Phoebe Morris writes to Dolley Madison about news of Washington society and mentions Elizabeth Monroe and Eliza Monroe Hay.

These superintendency records, sometimes called the William Clark papers, include record copies of letters sent and received, accounts and other fiscal records relating to the superintendency and various agents and subagents, many miscellaneous records, an office diary kept for William Clark, 1826-1831, and two record books of the Missouri Fur Company, 1812-1817. Some of the records antedate the organization as such of the St. Louis Superintendency in 1822, and others extend beyond Clark's own death in 1838. Letters received are mainly for the periods 1830-1832, 1839-1846; letters sent for the periods 1829-1832, 1839-1855, reflecting the superintendencies of Clark, Joshua Pilcher, David D. Mitchell, Thomas H. Harvey, and Alfred Cumming. (Cont.) During most of this period the jurisdiction of the St. Louis Superintendency extended over the upper Mississippi and the entire Missouri River Valley.
