Title: Papers, ca. 1949-1978.

This collection documents the creative process that characterized the development of advertisements from the 1940s-1970s. The materials comprise primarily sketches, paintings, photographs, roughs, and layouts, as well as finished ads in proof form. A variety of color (19), black-and-white photographs (11), and black-and-white contact sheets (6) used for ad campaigns are also present. Some storyboards (or copies) for TV commercials to be produced by Ogilvy & Mather are included. The most frequently represented client is Gilbey's (Gin and Vodka). Other companies and products featured include Rand McNally, Ogilvy & Mather, International Paper, IBM, El Producto, Staffordwear, Steuben Glass, Revlon, Ronson, INCO (International Nickel), Puerto Rico (Economic Development), Toro, Cinzano, Maidenform, Newsweek, Peugot, various liquors and cordials, and more. There are a few miscellaneous items, including original art signed by Paul Rand for what is most likely a poster. Two folders containing mostly liquor ads are labeled "Proofs-Fletcher Richards." Much of the material is large in format. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History. (01-021).

Correspondence, diaries, genealogical materials, legal documents, and other items related to multiple generations of the McNally family, particularly Rand McNally founder Andrew McNally, and his great grandson Andrew McNally III. Family papers also contain genealogical and other materials related to the Clark, MacMillin, Neff, and Vilas families. There is significant material from General Emmons Clark, grandfather of Margaret Clark McNally, who wrote multiple plays and kept journals documenting his life and travels. Also included are documents related to the purchase, development, and sale of the McNally's Southern California ranch, including correspondence, publicity, oil leases, and maps; the McNally trust; and other miscellanous real estate properties and financial papers. Photographs include multiple generations of the McNally family and relatives, including the Clark, MacMillin, Neff, and Vilas families. There is a collection of well-preserved daguerreotypes and ambrotypes, as well as photo albums, scrapbooks, and slides. Cunningham, Charles Crehore, 1910-1979. Curatorial Office Records of Charles Cunningham, 1973-1977.

Title: Curatorial Office Records of Charles Cunningham, 1973-1977.

Born in 1910 in Mamaroneck, NY, Charles C. Cunningham attended Harvard and became a curator at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts in 1935. From 1941 to 1966 he was the director of Hartford's Wadsworth Atheneum. He went on to become director of the Art Institute of Chicago until he retired from this position in 1972. George Heard Hamilton, then director of the Clark, invited Cunningham to become chief curator. Cunningham was responsible for two major exhibits at the Clark, The Elegant Academics in 1974 and Jongkind and the Pre-Impressionists: The Painters of the Ecole Saint-Simeon in 1976. He also initiated the Conservation Laboratory, which opened in 1977. Cunningham retired from the Clark that year and died in 1979. The Curatorial Office Records of Charles C. Cunningham primarily contain correspondence about potential museum acquisitions and discussions of loans with staff at other museums. Due to his long and respected career, Cunningham had many acquaintances and close friends among curators and directors at other art institutions, as well as among art historians and dealers. The correspondence in these records includes numerous exchanges about intellectual and business concerns in the art world. The high esteem and affection his peers felt for him is evidenced in letters that blur the line between professional and personal. Other materials in this series include: class lists and grades, assignments, and correspondence with students from several courses taught by Cunningham; CAI memoranda; and financial records about costs of exhibits and loans.
