Lyman Draper's notes, primarily of interviews (1841-1868), with maps and transcriptions from state and county archives, newspapers, and personal manuscripts, concerning the trans-Appalachian West from about 1750 to 1815, with emphasis on Indian-White conflict, the Revolutionary War, and the War of 1812. Includes material on Indian wars, including Dunmore's War, 1774; expeditions against the Cherokee in 1776, 1788, and 1793; Crawford's campaign, 1782; John Logan's Shawnee expedition, 1787; the Great Miami treaty, 1786; the Nickajack campaign, 1794; a battle between the Potawatomi and Stephen Cole's party, 1810; Henry Dodge's expeditions of 1812 and 1814; and Indian attacks and captivities in Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia. Also includes material on the Revolutionary War in Kentucky, Tennessee, the Carolinas, and the Mohawk Valley, and the battles of Point Pleasant, Monmouth, King's Mountain, and Blue Licks, activities of spies, St. Clair's defeat, and Clark's Illinois campaign. Material on the War of 1812 includes descriptions of the Chicago massacre and battles of Frenchtown, Raisin River, and Thames. Also includes information on early settlement in Missouri and Kentucky, the state of Franklin, Shays' Rebellion, the upper Mississippi River, Prairie du Chien (Wisconsin), the Rock River valley (Illinois and Wisconsin), Indian traders at Milwaukee (circa 1800), and Hugh F. Bell's recollections of game hunting and cooking in Kentucky (circa 1795), with instructions for making a bearskin coat. Persons interviewed include Seneca Indians at the Cattaraugus Reservation (New York); Nathan Boone, son of Daniel Boone, and his wife, Olive Van Bibber Boone; Simon Girty's daughter, Sarah Munger; and Simon Kenton's son, William M. Kenton. Includes excerpts from Benjamin Van Cleve's manuscript biography, from Nathaniel Hart's journal of Anthony Wayne's 1794 campaign, and copies of Wayne papers for 1792-1795. Individuals noted as subject terms below are discussed in the interviews. Also includes information on the Lewis family of Virginia, and on the Musick, Renfroe, Todd, and Wetzel families, and genealogical information for the Boone, Bryan, Callaway, Girty, Kenton, Munger, Sevier, and Van Bibber families, and for the families of John Cuppy, Thomas Dickerson, Silas Hedges, Henry Jolly, and Spencer Records. Maps include Kaskaskia (Illinois), portions of Ohio, Tennessee, and Kentucky, and the Tippecanoe battleground.

Copy of statement which asks, on behalf of the field officers of the Kentucky Militia, if the judge and attorney general of the Kentucky District will amend the laws on disciplining the militia. It also requests a ruling on field officers' right to impress supplies. In addition, it contains the opinions of George Muter, Caleb Wallace, and Harry Innes that field officers do have impressment rights.

Included are a 15 May 1786 statement of Logan concerning field officer's impressment of supplies for the use of the militia in the District of Kentucky; a 15 Sept. 1789 deed by Logan to Jane Montgomery for two hundred acres in Lincoln County, Ky.; and a 4 Apr. 1795 letter to Harry Innes requesting him to be at the Shelby County, Ky. courthouse on 11 Apr. to take the deposition of Martin Daniel in the suit of Innes as guardian in behalf of Colonel Stephen Trigg's estate against George May, Levi Todd, and Logan.

Arthur St. Clair had authorized a second detachment of 500 mounted men led by James Wilkinson to attack the upper Wabash Indian towns.

Included are papers gathered from Clark's descendants and from others who had proposed biographies, recollections of Clark's role in the early history of Kentucky and the Revolutionary War in the West, notes, copies of documents, and interviews with participants or their descendants. Draper's own voluminous notes and drafts of the first two chapters of Draper's proposed biography are also present.

Notebooks containing copies, excerpts, and summaries of articles on Western history compiled by Draper between 1846 and 1848 almost entirely from eighteenth-century newspapers, most of which he found in the Baltimore Library Company and Maryland Historical Society in Baltimore, Maryland, and in the American Philosophical Society in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Also included are extracts and copies from journals and letters of Conrad Weiser and George Croghan.

Title: Benjamin Logan letter, [179-].

This collection contains an undated copy of a letter written by Benjamin Logan to the Kentucky Senate challenging the gubernatorial election of 1796, in which Logan was a candidate. The letter in this collection states Logan's belief that "I conceive myself to have been constitutionally chosen Governor of this state, notwithstanding which the office is at this Time exercised by another Person." He informed the Senate that he was bringing the matter to that body for its investigation.

Papers which Lyman Draper gathered for a proposed biography on Simon Kenton, a noted scout and Indian fighter. Included are biographical sketches by other writers; correspondence with surviving pioneers and Kenton descendants; narrative notes about Kenton and his associates; original manuscripts by Kenton's contemporaries; dispositions describing Kenton's military career; legal documents; and newspaper and periodical articles. Kenton's own papers are sparse; although he could sign his name, he never learned to read or write.

Collection of papers of diverse dates and formats dealing with the early history of Kentucky. The original manuscripts were created by pioneer Kentucky settlers representing numerous occupations and professions--land promoters, surveyors, farmers, housewives, historians, teachers, clergymen, merchants, and soldiers. Several volumes relate primarily to events, institutions, and people in the city of Lexington, Kentucky; elsewhere is material on the development of Louisville and other communities. A major portion of the collection consists of the papers of John D. Shane, a Presbyterian minister in Ohio and Kentucky.
