Soldier, Politician
Colonel John Allen was a soldier during the War of 1812. His wife, Jane Logan Allen, was the daughter of Kentucky pioneer Benjamin Logan. Eliza, the daughter of John and Jane Allen, married Pierce Butler. Pierce Butler was a member of the Kentucky legislature during the period he wrote the letters in this collection.
