Contains typescript (carbon and mimeograph) copies of a study and reports annotated in pencil, correspondence, and a speech by Simons relating to the work of the Charleston Welfare Council. A typescript (carbon and mimeograph copies) study (1946 March-April) entitled "A study of the social and economic conditions of the Negro population, Charleston, South Carolina" conducted for the Charleston Welfare Council by the National Urban League as part of its Community Relations Project contains data about socio-economic, health, housing, education, and religious conditions of Charleston, South Carolina African Americans. Typescript (mimeograph) copies of excerpts from National Urban League Community Relations Project (for interracial social planning) reports of consultants and specialists contain recommendations and follow-up proposals. A speech (1947 May 6) to the Charleston Welfare Council concerning the activities of the Urban League Steering Committee delivered by Harriet P. Simons. A typewritten agenda of the Steering Committee - Urban League Survey contains annotations in pencil. A document written by the Charleston Welfare Council concerns the establishment and the functions of the Urban League Survey Project and its committee. Correspondence includes letters (1947 March 19-May 22) to Mrs. Albert [Harriet P.] Simons from individuals at the National Urban League including Warren M. Banner, Ethel R. Clark, Paul B. Cornely, Lester B. Granger, and Nelson C. Jackson. A letter (1947 June 13) from R.B. Herbert asks Simons to serve on the Committee on Law Enforcement of the South Carolina Committee of Southern Regional Council. A copy of a letter (1947 May 28) from Simons to Nelson C. Jackson, Director of the Southern Field Division of the National Urban League, thanks him for his letter and invites him to visit Charleston to discuss how his office may assist the Urban League Survey Committee in implementing their plans.

Papers consist of correspondence, financial records, papers pertaining to Simons' political and civic activities, and other items. Personal correspondence of Simons with her husband Albert and family members and friends concerns family and social life, household matters, hobbies and clothing, family vacations at Flat Rock (N.C.) and elsewhere, travels, economics, civil rights of African Americans, politics, and other matters. Correspondence, clippings (some photocopied), reports, pamphlets, and other materials (1938-1971) pertain to Simons' political and civic activities and concerns including voter education, electoral college reform, planned parenthood, promotion of public health, historic preservation, wartime civilian defense and relief work during World War II, support for the civil rights movement and desegregation, the improvement of race relations and local and state services for African Americans, women's rights and welfare, and other local, state, and national political issues. Much material pertains to the S.C. League of Women Voters and other organizations with which Simons was affiliated. Financial records (1916-1959) include accounts, notes, and correspondence regarding Simons' stock and bond transactions and dividends and financial planning; insurance policies; and an account book (1929-1937) for investment income and family expenses. Other items include manuscripts of Simons' unpublished travel articles; a draft of an unpublished article entitled "Brick in South Carolina, 1740-1750"; research notes on brickmaking and carpentry in South Carolina and other subjects; genealogical material on the Stoney family and related families; and biographical material on Harriet Simons.
