Private correspondence and letter books of Jeremiah Rusk, a Wisconsin Republican congressman (1871-1877), governor (1882-1889), and the first United States Secretary of Agriculture, (1889-1893), particularly concerning state and national elections and his tenure as Secretary of Agriculture. There are some official papers concerning his military service with the 25th Wisconsin Infantry and scant incoming correspondence concerning his years in Congress and as Governor. Prominent Wisconsin figures whose letters are scattered throughout the correspondence include Romanzo Bunn, Angus Cameron, Matthew H. Carpenter, Lucien B. Caswell, Lucius Fairchild, Richard Guenther, Nils P. Haugen, W.D. Hoard, Timothy O. Howe, Elisha W. Keyes, Charles King, Robert M. La Follette, Sr., Horace Rublee, Henry C. Papers of Guenther, a Wisconsin congressman and U.S. consul to Mexico City, Capetown, and Frankfurt, and of his family. Guenther's papers consist of fragmentary political and diplomatic correspondence, speeches and remarks, biographical clippings, and memorabilia. Family material includes correspondence, clippings, and a journal of Alice Lillian Motz, Guenther's daughter, and her husband Eugen Motz, former Chilean vice-counsel to Mexico City. Of note are genealogical documents and a journal of uncertain authorship kept during the Mexican revolution, 1913-1915. There are isolated letters to Guenther from Susan B. Anthony, Benjamin Harrison, Jeremiah Rusk, Philetus Sawyer, and John Sherman and a letter from Guenther to his wife concerning a 1904 visit with Theodore Roosevelt.

Title: Post-Civil War portrait photographs of Jeremiah M. Rusk [picture] ca. 1885-1887.

Two large portrait-style photographs of Jeremiah M. Rusk, an officer in the 25th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment during the Civil War who later became prominent in state and national politics, serving as Governor of Wisconsin and Secretary of Agriculture under President Benjamin Harrison. The first photograph shows an aged Rusk with long white beard from the waist up in full Union uniform with gauntlets, holding his campaign hat in his right hand and his officer's sword in his left. A small mounted caption provides some biographical information about Rusk. The second photograph shows Governor Rusk and seventeen members of his staff, all of whom are Civil War veterans who had an arm or a leg amputated. Referred to as his "maimed staff," these men accompanied Rusk to several G.A.R. national encampments. The photograph shows men with empty coat sleeves, late nineteenth century prosthetic wooden legs, crutches, and canes. It is a high quality photograph that speaks toward the sacrifices made by Civil War soldiers, the camraderie among veterans, and the tendency of the G.A.R. to make use of those images and perceptions to further veterans causes.

Papers of Lucius Fairchild, a Wisconsin Civil War general, Republican governor (1866-1872), and United States consul and diplomatic representative (1872-1881) at Liverpool, Paris, and Madrid; including extensive general correspondence, records of his public offices, speeches and writings, and diaries. The correspondence also concerns Fairchild's father, Jairus Cassius Fairchild, a businessman and the first mayor of Madison, Wis.; his siblings, Cassius, Charles, and Sarah Fairchild; his wife Frances Bull Fairchild; and daughter Mary Fairchild Morris. The correspondence of Sarah Fairchild, later Mrs. Eliab B. Dean and Mrs. Obadiah Conover, forms a valuable source of information for social history and description of the life of women in Madison, Wisconsin, and during the middle 1850's, in Superior, Wisconsin. Civil War letters from all three Fairchild sons are included. Lucius served with the 1st and 2nd Wisconsin Infantry regiments, Cassius served with the 16th Wisconsin, and Charles was a Navy paymaster.

Daniels, Edward. Papers, 1834-1900.

Title: Papers, 1834-1900.

Papers of a participant in political and social reform movements who was also the first state geologist of Wisconsin and colonel of the 1st Wisconsin Cavalry during the Civil War. The pre-war correspondence contains information on his lectures on geology and on his work for the Wisconsin Geological Survey, 1853-1861. A few letters touch upon his military career, 1861-1862, and some concern his partnership with Joseph Medill and Horace White in a speculative venture into coal mining in Illinois. After the war Daniels moved to Virginia and the postwar correspondence is largely concerned with Virginia politics, a newspaper enterprise in Richmond, Daniels' attempt to establish a cooperative industrial school on his estate, and a cooperative land colonization project in Mexico in which he was interested.
