English novelist.
Novelist and children's writer.
Charlotte Mary Yonge was born and lived all her life at Otterbourne, near Winchester. Her father had, on marrying, renounced a military career and moved from his family roots in Devon, but annual visits to cousins there were an important and enjoyable part of CMY's childhood. She was educated at home by her parents, William and Frances (nee Bargus), both of whom came from clerical families, and their conviction that women's education and talents should be nurtured within a framework of paternal Christian authority shaped her character, and is reflected in her writing. At 7 years she began teaching in Sunday school, and at 13 she was further influenced by John Keble, who had been appointed to the neighbouring parish, Hursley. He prepared her for confirmation, and encouraged her to view her writing as a talent to be developed in the service of the church, though he warned her against too blatant a tone of Christian polemic. She wrote over 200 volumes of fiction and non-fiction, as well as historical romances for children, text-books, a history of Christian names (1863), a life of her cousin Bishop Patteson (1874), and a memoir of Hannah More (1888). She also edited 'The Monthly Packet', a magazine for young ladies, from 1851 until 1890. Her most famous works of fiction include 'The Heir of Redclyffe' (1853), 'The Daisy Chain' (1856), 'The Young Stepmother' (1861), 'The Clever Woman of the Family' (1865), and 'The Pillars of the House' (1873). They explore the moral conflicts of sheltered lives, duty versus ambition, and the difference between real and apparent goodness. Although written mainly for young women, they were admired by her literary contemporaries, and in dealing with relationships in large families, often in isolated rural areas, they reveal changes in social mobility, education and housing, and in the Church of England. In 1868 Emily Davies wrote to Charlotte Yong, requesting her support for 'the proposed college for ladies', which CMY declined to offer, stating her preference for home education for girls, possibly continued voluntarily by the girls themselves, as being far more valuable both intellectually and morally. She also had 'decided objections to bringing large masses of girls together.' Nevertheless, Girton College has an impressive collection of Yonge's published work, as well as an important archive of papers, from various sources.

American and English literary and historical papers collected by Atcheson L. Hench [manuscript] 1814-1890.
Material collected by Hench, some as an autograph collection and others for use in his classes at the University of Virginia with examples of various periods. Modern autographs collected by Hench include letters by associates of Edgar Allan Poe; Civil War letters; papers relating to Virginia history; correspondence of writers and politicians, particularly from the Victorian era; and other miscellaneous correspondence with literary or histocial interest. Letters of Edwin Percy Whipple to Paul Hamilton Hayne and others discuss routine matters and Sir William Jones and the concept of "Sovereign Law." Letters of Nathaniel Parker Willis to Carey & Hart, [George Pope?] Morris, [Charles Warren?] Stoddard, John B. Van Schaick, Daniel Webster and others discuss literary matters chiefly for the Home Journal, social obligations and a legal problem. With these are calling cards, engraved portraits and an autograph. Charlotte Mary Yonge writes three unidentified correspondents sending proof, discussing illustrations, replying to an author and seeking information on the prophecies of Mother Shipton. Single letters of interest include James A. Walker to W. P. Hopkins on his Civil War service; Thomas Willis White complimenting Lewis Jacob Cist on his writing; G. J. Whyte-Melville discussing terms for publication of "Roy's Wife" with Frederic Chapman; William Wilkins on the purchase of a flatboat; Cornelia Grinnell Willis sends some pieces for the "Home Journal" to [George Pope?] Morris; Wiliam Wirt to his commanding officer on the location of Camp Warrenigh Church and requesting prolonges; Noah Worcester promising to forward a pacifist journal; Thomas C. Wright regarding histories of Trinity House, an association of English mariners; and Charles Mayne Young to Mary Russell Mitford requesting a manuscript of a new play. Form letters from Mitchell's Rare and Standard Books document the authenticity of two George Washington items for sale, 1890. A memorandum of Wiliam Woods, of Albemarle County, Va., concerns pay due several companies of Virginia Militia, 1815.

Title:
Fales Manuscript Collection ca. 1700-2000
The Fales Manuscript collection is made up of some 50,000 items, much of which was assembled by DeCoursey Fales from 1908-1966 and donated to NYU. The provenance of the materials is complicated, however. Following Fales' death in 1966, other collections and purchases were added into the Fales Manuscripts collection. We do not have a comprehensive listing of what Fales owned and what the library later purchased after his death. The collection consists of correspondence, manuscripts, drawings, photographs, realia, ephemera, and other materials primarily about English and American authors from 1700 to the present. There are special strenths in the Victorian, Edwardian, English 1890s, and Transition Period writers.

The collection contains letters pertaining to Smede's book "Memorials of a Southern Planter," particularly reader responses, English sales and an incident in which Andrew Lang poked fun at the name of the author in verse and apologized after Smede's nephew, University of Virginia professor Richard Heath Dabney, rejoindered with a verse of his own. Copies of both poems are included. In addition there is a letter from Jeanie D. Hogg concerning American travels and news from Edinburgh. There is also a letter, 1899, from A.D. Brydon to Richard Heath Dabney offering to barter books and two autographs of John Randolph of Roanoke for clothing for a poor family. With the letter are a franked cover of Randolph to Beverley Tucker, and a letter, 1818, from Randolph expressing respect for Paul Carrington.
