The papers consist of correspondence, subject files, writings, and artifacts which document the professional career of Harvey Williams Cushing. Contains correspondence, notes, reports, lectures, charts, patient records, and photographs recording Richardson's personal and professional activities as an abdominal surgeon and educator at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital and changes in medical education and surgical practice between 1874 and 1912. Correspondence illustrates Richardson's diverse contacts and interests, and contains letters from many physicians in the United States. Student notes, hand-drawn illustrations, and correspondence describe Richardson's medical and clinical training, while notes, class schedules, syllabi, examinations, and lectures illustrate Richardson's teaching activities at Harvard Medical School and the changing nature of surgical studies from the mid 1870s through early 1910s. Financial ledgers, notes, drawings, glass slides, and photographs document his private practice; also includes correspondence and patient records of his son Edward Peirson Richardson, Sr. (1881-1944), with whom he shared a private practice from 1906 to 1912. Richardson's articles, lectures, drafts, notes, and pamphlets chronicle his innovative surgical techniques and research in abdominal surgery. Patient records, containing medical illustrations, patient case histories, manuscript notes, consultation notes, temperature charts, pathological reports, appointment books, and patient history and drug files, provide further detail about early 20th century medical care.

Simon Flexner Papers, 1891-1946

Title: Simon Flexner Papers 1891-1946

Simon Flexner, born in 1863, one of the nation's leading experts in pathology and bacteriology, was most renowned for his research on cerebrospinal meningitis, polio and infantile paralysis. Arguably though, Flexner's stewardship of the Rockefeller Institute was his greatest contribution to medical and scientific research. His rise in the medical community began in the late nineteenth century in Louisville, Kentucky, where despite not having completed even the seventh grade, Flexner taught himself basic bacteriology by conducting experiments at home using a microscope borrowed from the pharmacy where he served as an apprentice. Granted a medical degree from the University of Louisville School of Medicine in 1889, he went on to a pathology fellowship at the newly opened John Hopkins School of Medicine. Within two short years of leaving Louisville, Flexner received an assistant of pathology appointment at Johns Hopkins. It was a quick ascent and the beginning of a long and brilliant career that included a prestigious appointment at the University of Pennsylvania and then a directorship at the new Rockefeller Institute where he realized his lifelong dream of creating a dynamic and productive research laboratory. The Rockefeller Institute became instantly famous worldwide as the preeminent research facility for virology and under Flexner's direction produced invaluable contributions in pathology, bacteriology, and immunology. This collection does not reflect the early phases of Flexner's career at Johns Hopkins but does document an early interest in meningitis and other infectious diseases with science-related correspondence, laboratory notebooks, and administrative correspondence with the New York City and State Departments of Health. There is abundant material on Flexner's directorship of the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research, including Flexner's search for staff, an involved process which is detailed in correspondence with the scientists, many of whom became quite famous. Also included is material relating to the other institutions and Rockefeller philanthropies with which Flexner was involved. (Among the most significant correspondence, however, may be that which documents the support of the General Education Board and the Rockefeller Foundation in the development and subsequent reorganization of medical schools following brother Abraham Flexner's scathing report on medical education in the United States and Canada). This collection would be of great interest to anyone interested in the history of bacteriology, histology, and immunology or the general history of modern medicine and philanthropy.

Charles Eliot Norton papers

Title: Charles Eliot Norton papers

This archive contains letters addressed to Charles Eliot Norton from about 1845 to1908. Norton was a Harvard graduate (A.B. 1846) and professor of the History of Fine Arts at Harvard from 1874 to 1898, with a special interest in the study and translation of Dante. Many of the letters in this collection deal with art and with Dante. In addition he knew a great many prominent figures in both England and the United States, especially those in the political field and the literary and artistics fields. His correspondence with these people often touches upon their public and their private lives. From 1863 to 1868 Norton was joint editor with his friend James Russell Lowell of the North American review. The letters addressed to him as editor are marked in this index by a star (*) and the folders containing them are stamped with a red N.A.R.(=North American Review). In 1898 Norton's opposition to the Spanish-American war led Senator George F. Hoar to criticize him. A list of some of the letters Norton received commenting on this controversy is at the end of this index. Referenced throughout the finding aid is the Excavations at Delphi (scrapbook folder) with a folder designation, such as f.1, f.2, and so on. All folders can be found at item number 5308.
