Correspondence, bills, receipts, an incomplete diary (1851) of Failing's voyage from New York to Oregon, notebooks (1879-1880) kept on a European tour, and other papers, relating to the First National Bank (Portland), investment interests, the Keystone Mining and Milling Company, the Oregon Iron Company (Oswego, Or.), the Willamette Iron and Steel Works, the construction of the Failing home, and Failing's interests in the University of Oregon, the Portland Fire Department, Portland Library Association, the First Baptist Church of Portland, Tualatin Academy, and Pacific University. Includes papers relating to the estates of Josiah Failing (Portland, Or.), John A. Hatt and his wife, Emma M. Hatt (New York City), and John B. Price (Walla Walla, Wash.). Correspondents include Jesse Applegate, Henry W. Corbett, Emily Corbett (Failing) Cabell, Edward Failing, Henrietta Ellison Failing, Mary Forbush Failing, Emma Hatt, John A. Hatt, and William S. Ladd. Of note among the business correspondence are letters from railroad magnate Henry Villard regarding the building of the Northern Pacific Railroad.

Records include: I. Merchant records include account books of the Ladd and Tilton Mercantile. These volumes record the names of purchasers, amounts of purchases, and items purchased. II. The Ladd & Tilton Bank was given the responsibility to pay Indian war volunteers and merchants for salaries and items the troops required; information includes conscripts' names and the amounts volunteers were reimbursed for use of their horses. III. Bank records contain ledgers which include amounts payable and receivable (1859-1868), bills bought by Ladd & Tilton (1860-1865), lot books (1860-1865), depositors balances, makers and owers, loans (1859-1878), mortgages (1873-1908), signature book, and minutes (1908-1931) of stockholders' meetings.

Title: Matthew Paul Deady Papers 1850-1923

Papers of Matthew Deady, U.S. District Judge for Oregon and prominent figure in territorial and early state affairs. The collection consists of letters written to Deady from friends and political correspondents, including many of Oregon's leading state and national politicians in the late nineteenth century. Influential forces in the state such as Jesse Applegate and Asahel Bush are voluminously represented, as are U.S. senators Joseph Lane, James W. Nesmith, Henry W. Corbett, George Williams, Lafayette Grover and Cyrus Dolph. Complementing these is a small collection of letters written by Deady to several of the same persons. Also included are Deady's personal journals and family materials.

Influential forces such as Jesse Applegate and Asahel Bush are voluminously represented as are U.S. senators Joseph Lane, James W. Nesmith, Henry W. Corbett, George Williams and La Fayette Grover. Complementing these is a small set of letters written by Deady to several of the same persons. Deady's personal journal, comprising several volumes, recorded his thoughts and activities during the last twenty-five years of his life. Also included are receipts, cards and invitations amassed over several years and texts of commencement speeches Deady gave in the 1870s and 1880s. Completing the Deady papers are several documents generated and added after Matthew's death by his wife, Lucy Ann Deady, including her autobiographical narrative describing her family's trek from Missouri to Oregon in 1846.
