Most of these are in the period 1870-1930, but a few date to the 18th century. They relate chiefly to the Civil War and Reconstruction in Virginia, to the Negro question, and to the University of Virginia. Among the items are a Bermuda land plat, 1787, with signatures of Sarah Nash, James Perot, William Todd, Mallory Todd, John Jennings, Robert Jennings; a report by George Frederick Holmes, William Holmes McGuffey, and John B. Minor on the University of Virginia magazine, 1858; a description of the University in 1865; text of an anniversary address before the University of Virginia Jefferson Society. The collection contains letters, commissions, orders, notes, reports, and clippings pertaining to Lee's service in the U.S. cavalry in the West and in the C.S.A. cavalry. Post-Civil War material includes correspondence, speeches, and clippings about Civil War incidents and leaders, especially James Longstreet and the battle of Gettysburg. Other material concerns his travels, his service as consul-general at Havana during the Cuban revolution and in the Spanish American War. Business interests are represented by correspondence and papers pertinent to the American Animal Tether Company, the Chicago Town Company of Virginia, the Pittsburgh and Virginia Railroad Company, the Rockbridge Company, and the South Boston Improvement Company. There is some material, chiefly financial and legal documents, of the Lee and related Mason family ancestors including Northern Neck land grants and a deed of gift for a slave, as well as a diary of Mrs. Sidney Smith Lee. Among items of interest are an 1859 report by Earl Van Dorn on a skirmish with Commanches, confidential communications of Lee, Robert E. Lee and Jeb Stuart including telegrams to Stuart before Yellow Tavern, Fitzhugh Lee's report on the Appomattox campaign, letters regarding events of the Cuban revolution including the Isle of Pines uprising, the U.S.S. Maine, and an incident involving General Shafter, and a letter from a former driver offering to serve in the Spanish American War.

Chiefly business correspondence from Patteson's law practice. Subjects other than legal matters include Virginia politics, the University of Virginia, Buckingham and Cumberland Counties' politics, free silver, and the appointment of Thomas Henry Carter as proctor of the University of Virginia in 1897. Of interest are a letter from John W. Daniel commenting on the defeat of William J. Bryan for the presidency in 1896; Armistead C. Gordon's summation of Woodrow Wilson as a prospective president of the University of Virginia; an 1897 petition from the University of Virginia faculty to the Proctor, asking that the Building Committee consult with them over new construction; and an 1897 letter from Woodrow Wilson urging a promotion for U. Va. professory Richard H. Dabney. Includes writings, many fragmented, on Patteson's proposed legislation concerning trustees and fiduciaries and protection for individuals against trusts and corporations. Correspondents include Archer Anderson, Charles Minor Blackford, John Thompson Brown, Joseph Bryan, A. S. Buford, William Cabell, Richard H. Dabney, John W. Daniel, Henry D. Flood, Armistead C.
