Title: Papers, 1959-1983.

Papers of a former University of Wisconsin-Madison student, anti-Vietnam War activist, and editor of "Take Over," an underground newspaper published in Madison from 1971 to 1979. Included are Take Over's administrative, financial, legal, and subject files, correspondence, photographs, print and near-print ephemera, posters, bumper stickers, and clippings; as well as copies of FBI files mainly concerning individuals, organizations, and events in Madison, 1959-1977; and similar materials from the Madison Police Department Affinity Files, 1968-1977. Also included are tape recordings of speeches and interviews by Fellner, about 1973-1979, with Emile de Antonio, Harvey Goldberg, William Kunstler, Paul Soglin, members of the Weather Underground Organization, former FBI agents, and others. Among individuals, organizations, issues, and events mentioned in the papers are Robert Kastenmeier, Oliver Steinberg, Students for a Democratic Society, Youth International Party (Yippies), the defense of U.S. political prisoners, the 1970 bombing of the University of Wisconsin's U.S. Army Mathematics Research Center by a group including Karleton Armstrong, and FBI surveillance and counterintelligence activities in Madison during the 1960's and 1970's. The photographic portion of this collection documents local individuals, events, and well-known visitors, as well as Take-Over sponsored activities, special stories, and newspaper staff. Also documented are people and events from Fellner's personal life including visits to Cuba and Mifflin Street Block Parties. The processed portion of this collection is summarized above, dates 1959-1980, and is described in the register. Additional accessions date 1960-1983, which include taped interviews conducted by Fellner while researching a proposed book on Madison attorney Edward Ben Elson as well as additional FBI files obtained by Fellner under the Freedom of Information Act.

The Lothar and Eva Just Film Stills Collection at the Harvard Film Archive consists of approximately 800,000 film stills, pressbooks, posters, and other cinema-related ephemera originally amassed by Lothar Just, a Munich-based film publicist. Just's expansive collection began in the gathering of image and source material for the annual film lexicons, the Heyne Filmlexikon and Filmjahrbuch, which he continues to publish.

Papers related to Tuchman's co-authoring with Emile de Antonio the book Painters Painting: A History of American Modernism in the Words of Those Who Created It (Abbeville Press, 1984). The book was based on uncut transcripts and the film script from de Antonio's 1972 film Painters Painting, inspired by the Museum of Modern Art's exhibition, New York Painting and Sculpture: 1940-1970, curated by Henry Geldzahler. Included are correspondence; transcripts of interviews conducted by de Antonio of painters, critics, curators, and collectors; notes; drafts of the book; and a subject card file.

Barbara Rose papers, 1940-1993 (bulk 1960-1985).

Title: Barbara Rose papers, 1940-1993 (bulk 1960-1985).

The collection, a selected portion from the total Barbara Rose archive, documents Rose's research and writings about American art, especially the New York art world during the 1960s and 1970s. It contains correspondence, manuscripts, photographs, and audio and video tapes. About .5 linear ft. of correspondence from artists includes substantial files of letters from Anne and Avigdor Arikha, and Mark Di Suvero, plus copies of letters between Ad Reinhardt and Thomas Merton (1956-64), and two 1966 letters from Robert Motherwell in which he describes the post-war New York art scene. Correspondence with other artists, critics and dealers is scattered throughout the manuscript and research files. These latter files contain Rose's research and portions of manuscripts for published and unpublished works on Patrick Henry Bruce, Georgia O'Keefe, Andy Warhol, Lee Krasner and Jackson Pollock, the Fernando Vijande gallery in Spain, E.A.T. (Experiments in Art and Technology), and the Art and Technology program of the Los Angeles County Museum. Smaller files contain notes and portions of manuscripts about Clement Greenberg, Peggy Guggenheim, Alexander Liberman, Mark Di Suvero, and the Pier 35 project in New York City. One file contains Rose's student notes from a class with Meyer Schapiro. The Vijande Gallery material includes biographical and visual material (slides and photographs) about Spanish artists, most of whom were represented by the gallery. These include José Luis Alexanco, Frederic Amat, Francesc Artigua, Rafael Baixeras, Evaristo Bellotti, Juan Bordes, Carmen Calvo, Miguel Angel Camparo, Joan Cardells, Victoria Civera, Chema Cobo, Costus, Gerardo Delgado, Xavier Franquesa, Maria Gomez, Luis Gordillo, Miquel Navarro, Soledad Sevilla, José Maria Sicilia, Juan Uslé, and Zush.

Collection comprises correspondence, research materials (printed materials, interviews, legal documents, newsletters, notes, etc.), manuscripts and galley proofs, advertising and publicity, reviews and reader responses--materials generated during the research, writing and publication of these three works. The research files contain a wealth of data on the three disparate topics: American death rituals and funeral industry; the conspiracy trial of Dr. Benjamin Spock, civil disobedience and Vietnam-era jurisprudence; and the American prison system, criminal justice and corrections. Only a small amount of personal materials (which fall within the context of Mitford's activities as author of said books) form a part of this collection. Records of the East Bay Memorial Association (1954-1962), of which Mitford's husband Robert Treuhaft was an officer, are also included in Series I.

Papers, mainly 1950s-1980s, of Emile de Antonio (1919-1989), a documentary filmmaker whose work has been characterized by critical exploration of themes in contemporary politics and society. Included are biographical information, correspondence, and extensive files on films produced or considered for production. Although present in varying completeness, the documentation is excellent for "America Is Hard to See" (1970), a study of Eugene J. McCarthy's bid for the presidency in 1968; "In the King of Prussia" (1982), an account of the trial of members of the Plowshares Eight; "In the Year of the Pig" (1968), a historical view of the Vietnam War; "Millhouse: A White Comedy" (1971), a political biography of Richard M. Nixon; "Painters Painting" (1972), a study of contemporary American art and artists; "Point of Order" (1964), a study of the Army-McCarthy hearings; "Rush to Judgment" (1966), an investigation of the Warren Commission findings; and "Underground" (1976), interviews with fugitive members of the radical Weather Underground organization. Unproduced films include similar documentation of lesser extent. Of note are materials on Bertrand Russell, an interview with Frank Lloyd Wright by Mike Wallace, work on the lives of the Kennedy brothers, and an early chapter draft of Frances Fitzgerald's best selling book on Vietnam, "Fire in the Lake." The collection includes correspondence with Catholic peace activists Daniel and Philip Berrigan; filmmakers Haskell Wexler, Mary Lampson, and Glenn Silber; writers Mitch Tuchman and Peter von Bagh; artist Kazuko Oshima; and New Yorker Films head Daniel Talbot. Also present are transcripts of interviews with actor Martin Sheen, artist Frank Stella, former FBI agent Wesley Swearingen, former CIA agent Philip Agee, and art world figures featured in the film "Painters Painting." The remainder of the papers is comprised of personal and business correspondence; biographical clippings and articles; family papers; and a small group of files relating to various film and art societies and political organizations with which de Antonio was involved. Films include four of de Antonio's works and an additional 249 cans of negatives and trims. The processed portion of this collection is summarized above, dates 1868-1984, and is described in the register. Additional accessions date to 1990 and are described below.

Papers of documentary filmmaker Glenn Silber reflecting his career from about the time he graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (ca. 1972) until he joined CBS news (ca. 1990). The bulk of the collection consists of film/video and audio elements for several major independent films produced by Silber and his production company, Catalyst Media, including "An American Ism: Joe McCarthy" (about the anti-communist senator from Wisconsin); "The War at Home" (about the anti-Vietnam War movement in Madison, Wis.); "El Salvador: Another Vietnam" (a film that explores the roots of the civil war in El Salvador); "Atomic Artist" (a portrait of New York painter/sculptor T. A. Price and his unique "atomic art"); and "Troupers" (a portrait of the San Francisco Mime Troupe).
