Pew Charitable Trusts. Office of the Executive Director. Records of Rebecca W. Rimel, 1988-
Title:
Records of Rebecca W. Rimel, 1988-
Subseries B. Sub-Subseries i. contains Rebecca W. Rimel's general correspondence as executive director (1988-1993) of The Pew Charitable Trusts. (Her records as president and CEO form Subseries C., Series V of Accession 2020: The Records of The Pew Charitable Trusts.) It is arranged alphabetically by correspondent for each year. (Note: Because of this arrangement, correspondence from 1988 includes some letters written while Rimel was vice president responsible for health sciences funding.) A portion of this Sub-Subseries includes grant acknowledgments and check requests. The majority, however, contains correspondence with a variety of individuals and grant-seeking institutions, other charitable foundations, local and national political figures and personal and professional acquaintances. Topics include requests for funds; the progress of current grants and Trust-initiated programs; media coverage of the trusts; grants, programs and staffing changes at other foundations; invitations to events; Rimel's service on external boards of trustees; her continuing interest in research on head injury; and the effect of national and local political decisions on foundations. Some of Rimel's correspondence reflect her efforts to guide the trusts through the organizational changes of the late 1980s, including letters from longtime grantees concerned that the reorganization might fundamentally alter the trusts' traditional grantmaking focus. Subseries B. Sub-Subseries ii. contains administrative records held by Rimel: including program plans, project files and external board membership. (Note: This Sub-Subseries includes some records held by Rimel when she served as program director and president and CEO of The Pew Charitable Trusts.).

Title:
Oral history interview with Elfida Marquez Gutièrrez, 1996 [videorecording].
Elfida Marquez Gutiérrez begins with her family's background and her college years. She describes the discrimination she encountered, particularly when living in Lubbock, Texas, and compares her high school years in her hometown to her experiences at college. She talks about the family moving to Socorro and about working in the Socorro Independent School District. She discusses unethical real estate developers, the homes they built in Socorro, and the tactics she learned from the Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán (MEChA) to fight for public utilties for their neighborhoods. She notes her involvement in the incorporation of Socorro as a city, its zoning issues, and the election campaigns of Carlos Aguilar and Nacho Padilla. She discusses her appointment and election to the El Paso Community College Board of Trustees and details her election campaign. She refers to the colonia of Montana Vista and cites the W. K. Kellogg Foundation for its assistance there. She relates how the national level of the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT) lacked Hispanic representation and tells about the work of the national and state levels of the Association of Latino Community College Trustees. She comments on her role as an educator and administrator, talks about state representative Norma Chavez, and mentions such notable Mexican Americans as Barbara Perez, Sergio Lewis, Dan Morales, and Henry Cisneros.

Title:
Higher Education Resource Services (HERS) records 1969-1999
Higher Education Resource Services (HERS) was started in 1972 at Brown University to promote women in higher education administration. HERS originally started as a referral and placement service for women in higher education, and it now provides professional development opportunities for professional academic women. As of 2005, HERS has three offices: HERS, Mid-America (located at the University of Denver since 1983), HERS, New-England (at Wellesley College since 1976), and HERS, West (at the University of Utah). Beginning in 1976, HERS and Bryn Mawr College have co-sponsored a four week Summer Institute for Women in Higher Education Administration. The Institute has had over 200 participants from the United States and abroad. In 1978, HERS, New England began The Management Institute for Women in Higher Education at Wellesley College. The Management Institute is a series of five weekend seminars providing management training for professional women administrators. The National Associate of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators (NACWAA)/HERS Institute for Administrative Advancement (IAA) is held for a week in June in various locations. Recently HERS completed the HERS South Africa Seminar, funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, which provided the opportunity for 80 South African women to learn about higher education processes in the United States. All of the offices in the HERS network are involved in other activities to promote women, particularly women in higher education administration. These include working with women on career mapping and guidance; collaboration with other organizations, colleges and universities; attending and presenting in conferences; publishing; and service on various education related boards and commissions. Dr. Cynthia Secor has been the Director of the HERS Network since 1975 and is the founding Director of the Summer Institute and HERS, Mid-America.
