Title: Charles A. Frye papers, 1964-1995.

The Charles A. Frye Papers, 1964-1995, reflect the teaching and writer career of this professor of African and African-American philosophy, religion and literature. The collection consists of files regarding his teaching career and general correspondence with colleagues, among them Fela Sowande, one of his professors at Howard University. Correspondence dealing with conferences pertains to themes of multiculturalism, literature, black studies curricula and related subjects. Only the folder for the Institute of the Black World contains conference papers including papers presented by St. Clair Drake and James Turner. Correspondence with publishers discusses manuscripts Frye submitted for publication including his novel "The Peter Pan Chronicles." The Writings series, 1964-1993, contains drafts and in some instances, photocopies and background materials for articles and other writings he authored, most of which were published. Among other topics, he wrote on African and African-American studies, black philosophy, and aspects of his study of the Don Juan figure. Included are some of his college papers, Master's thesis and Ph. D. dissertation, academic books, The Peter Pan Chronicles, an unpublished screenplay "Solina," short stories, and poems. Manuscripts for his unpublished novel "A Good Night's Leap," his unfinished study "Peasant Ways of Knowing," and papers presented at seminars and conferences also form part of this series. There are also files pertaining to Frye's consultancies and board membership as well as syllabi and course materials gathered from courses Frye took as a student and from those he taught. Reference material includes papers presented at conferences concerning the subjects which interested Frye, e.g. black studies curricula, African and African-American religion, philosophy and ideology. There are a number of articles by Fela Sowande.

Divided into 18 series and spanning the years 1935 to 1990, the collection documents Drake's career as an educator and social anthropologist in the United States, Liberia, Great Britain and Ghana, and consists for the most part of correspondence, writings, office files and research materials. Research materials in the collection include a series of interviews and records of participants-observers in a survey of churches and voluntary associations in New Orleans, gathered by students and research assistants at Dillard University under the direction of Allison Davis and Drake in 1937; interview material, participant-observer records and printed matter on race relations and community life in Chicago; writings, field notes and documents of black social service organizations relating to black life in the British Isles; and correspondence, curriculum material, research notes, office files and printed matter related to education and social life in Ghana and the development of a new town and modern harbor in the old fishing village of Tema. Smaller bodies of material relate to Liberia, Kenya, Somalia, India, the U.S. Peace Corps in Africa, and to a survey of mass communications in tropical Africa.

Divided into 18 series and spanning the years 1935 to 1990, the collection documents Drake's career as an educator and social anthropologist in the United States, Liberia, Great Britain and Ghana, and consists for the most part of correspondence, writings, office files and research materials. Drake's research notes and his office files from Roosevelt and Stanford Universities have been grouped together but remain otherwise unprocessed. Significant correspondents in the collection include Lawrence Reddick, Claude Barnett, Julian Mayfield, Frank Untermeyer, Adelaide Cromwell, Horace Mann Bond, Horace Cayton, Robert Roberts, Mbiyu Koinange and Mugo Gatheru. A very large portion of Drake's writings remains unpublished; this is especially true of his many conference papers, articles and essays.

The majority of the collection relates to studies conducted and courses offered by the training center for social workers and leaders of community centers. Some programs were co-sponsored by the Hull House Association. Topics include urbanization, urban renewal, race relations, neighborhoods, childcare, delinquency, employment, poverty, and family planning, primarily involving community centers in large U.S. cities. Also present are the office files of Arthur Hillman, director of the Training Center; a survey report on race relations in the United States, by St. Clair Drake, and research for the report; and a report on Chicago schools, by Mary J. Herrick.
