The Pierian Sodality was founded in 1808, and has always predominantly focused on instrumental music. The early society was especially well-known for its late-night serenading of young women. By 1900, the organization could refer to itself as the Harvard University Orchestra. Members joined the Radcliffe Orchestra for joint concerts during the 1930s, and in 1942, the two groups merged to found the Harvard-Radcliffe Orchestra.

From the very beginning of the Pierian Sodality of 1808, its alumni formed a club of "graduate members" so that they could continue playing together after graduation. In those early decades the Pierian Sodality had less than a dozen members, consisting mostly of winds (including several players of wooden flutes and a serpent). Postcards, letters, and one mounted miniature watercolor painting, mainly addressed to Hans von Briesen between the years 1893 and 1897. During this period von Briesen was attending Columbia College and Harvard College. A few letters are in German, and a handful are addressed to Fritz von Briesen and to a Réné Herzog von Briesen, thought the latter appears to refer to Hans. The bulk of the letters are personal, many from the von Briesen family; the remainder relate to Hans von Briesen's interests, such as the Boston Legal Aid Society and the Pierian Sodality at Harvard, and a few reminders of late coursework and overdue library books. A few letters are from relatives in Germany.

Consists primarily of letters written by Frothingham to his parents while he was a student in Harvard College. The nearly daily missives include his comments on professors and courses, social and dormitory life, and vacation travel, primarily to New Hampshire and Maine. His participation in the Harvard Camera Club, Pierian Sodality, Hasty Pudding Club, and the Crimson newspaper are reflected in the correspondence. The collection also includes four photographs, possibly taken and developed by Frothingham; two depict Harvard Yard and two depict Frothingham with friends.
