Title: Booth family collection, ca. 1890-1938.

This collection consists of correspondence and photograph postcards dating from ca. 1890 to 1938. The letters were written by William Booth, Bramwell Booth, and Evangeline Booth concerning Salvation Army business. The letters written by William Booth are primarily words of encouragement to other Salvation Army officers. There is one letter to Colonel and Mrs. David C. Lamb acknowledging their words of sympathy on the death of Catherine Mumford Booth in 1890. The collection contains one leter written by Bramford Booth to Alderman Wakefield in December 1914 requesting assistance in meeting the social needs created by England's participation in World War I. The correspondence of Evangeline Booth is all written to either David C. Lamb or to his wife. These letters acknowledge her appreciation for the Lamb's support and friendship as well as concern about the health of Mrs. Lamb. The photograph postcards include one picture of a Salvation Army Wagon and a picture of William Booth speaking from a car.

Topics of interest include complaints of extravagance by a Harvard student, 1815; the War of 1812; slaves and slavery (including an 1854 inventory); genealogy; the American Party and its opposition to Roman Catholics as office holders; rail travel from Virginia to Florida in 1857; cotton; Orange County court house construction; and Reconstruction, the Republican Party, and the Virginia Convention of 1867. Also the Immigration Society; the shooting of General Thompson by Osceola at Ft. King; William Mahone's political activities; a St. Paul law practice in 1886; the Minneapolis exposition, 1886; the destruction of Madison letters by a gardener; a building for the Library of Congress; Fitzhugh Lee as governor; Thomas L. Rosser's political opinions; and Russian and Polish affairs, 1889. The Alben W. Barkley papers (dated 1893-1966, undated; 167 cubic feet) include correspondence, speeches, scrapbooks, cartoons, clippings, photographs, books, pamphlets, recordings, and memorabilia documenting Barkley's political career, including his time as Congressman, Senator, and Vice President. Each group, with the exception of the recordings, offers a cross section of the period represented in the papers. The papers cover the period of Senator Barkley's public career, and the two years, January 1953 to January 1955, when he was not in office. During the years 1953-1954, he was engaged in writing his autobiography, "That Reminds Me," publishing magazine articles, making radio and television appearances, and filling a great variety of speaking engagements.
