William Booth, founder and first general of the Salvation Army, was born in Nottingham, England, in 1829. He was a minister of the Methodist New Connexion [sic] from 1855 to 1861 when he and his wife, Catherine Mumford, left the movement to start their street ministry. This ministry was formally organized as the Salvation Army in 1878.
