Title: Joseph Sill selected diaries

Ca. 850 pages of selected art related excerpts from Sill's diaries. The diaries date from 1832 to 1854 and document his own painting activities, his association with the Artists and Amateurs Association, Artists' Fund Society, and Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He gives his reactions to the work of other artists as seen in exhibitions in Philadelphia and New York, especially at the National Academy of Design, as well as in private collections. He writes about panoramas shown in Philadelphia, purchases of works of art for himself and others, commissions to artists to paint pictures for him, etc. In particular he writes frequently of his friend, the collector and patron Edward L. Carey, and of Carey's collection. He often mentions John Sartain, James R. Lambdin, Peter F. Rothermel, Daniel Huntington, Thomas Sully, William H. Furness, Emanuel Leutze, George L. Saunders, Samuel B. Waugh, Paul Weber, William J. Hubard, Monachesi, and John Neagle. He tells of the founding and subsequent activities of the Art-Union of Philadelphia; the sale of Joshua Shaw's paintings and his misfortunes; the work and ill natured personality of William Page; meeting with and a drawing and description of John J. Audubon; a controversy between Robert W. Weir and Samuel F. B. Morse about who will paint the Mayflower Compact; V. G. Audubon's efforts to get subscribers for his father's book; and Bowen's lithographic shop.

The collection includes correspondence, 1826-1866, accounts, and other records of Charles Palmer, commission merchant of Richmond, Va. Correspondence in part concerns personal and business affairs, as well as Virginia and national politics, and includes letters written by John Minor Botts, John Augustus Chevallié, William Wood Crump, and James Ewell Heath. Also, contains correspondence, 1875-1894, of Richmond, Va., physician and historian William Price Palmer, in part concerning his service with the 56th Virginia Infantry, C.S.A. Additional subjects include sculptor William James Hubard and the 1st company of the Richmond Howitzers, C.S.A.A commonplace book, 1857-1888, includes notes on persons and subjects from the period of the American Revolution. Other commonplace books concern the Calendar of Virginia State Papers ... (Richmond, 1875- 1893), edited by Palmer and others.

Hart, Charles Henry, 1847-1918. Papers, 1885-1941, 1885-1897 and 1927-1941 (bulk dates).

The collection consists of letters written to Charles Henry Hart about several silhouette artists and notes and articles about a number of different American artists. The articles, at least, were collected by someone other than Hart as they all postdate his death. The notes were either made by Theodore Bolton or were taken from works by him. The silhouette artists in whom Hart was interested were William H. Brown, Augustin Edouart, and William James Hubard. Hart corresponded with family members and friends in order to learn more information about the men. A letter from John Sartain concerned work he had done for Hubard. The collection includes some reproductions and photographs of silhouettes, but no originals. It is not known who put the collection together.

Also includes letters from Maria Tabb Hubard to her brother John H. Tabb, and her sister, Mrs. James K. Dabney. Other correspondents include Brantz Mayer of Baltimore, Benjamin H. Latrobe, C.W. Dunnington of Washington, Robert Saunders of Williamsburg, Henry A. Wise, Bruce Gwynn of Raleigh, W.W. Hague, George Butler, Sanuel Curtis, William P. Palmer, C.Q. Tompkins, Thomas Bragg, Bob Reynolds, John Baird, Montrose A. Pallen of St. Louis, Mo., Josiah Deans of "Rosewell," and Hiram Powers of Florence, Italy (discussing Hubard's views on art). Topics include portraits Hubard painted, the building of "Elmington," and family news. Also includes material on Hubard's work and life written after his death by his descendants.

Exchange (Ship). Logbook : of the Exchange (Ship), 1764 March 20 - September 20.

Title: Logbook : of the Exchange (Ship), 1764 March 20 - September 20.

Under the command of William Outram, the Exchange sailed from London to Virginia and return. The first section of the logbook contains daily entries consisting of information on marine weather conditions, course, winds, and distance traveled per day. The last entry to contain coordinates is 17 September 1764 which places the ship west of London. The 18, 19 and 20 September entries contain only wind speed and direction, and other weather conditions. The last eight pages of the volume contain information on medicinal treatments, i.e., "a remedy for sore gums and loose teeth ... a remedy for corns on the feet ... a good recipe for preventing infection ... for the dropsy." It also lists "directions for tanning [hides]."
