Brown Instrument Company. Records, 1925-1960.
Title:
Records, 1925-1960.
The records of the Brown Instrument Company consist of research files documenting the development of measuring instruments and industrial control systems used in continuous process manufacturing. The files trace the evolution of electromechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic devices produced by the Brown Company. Trade catalogs dating from 1910 show that Brown's earliest electric meters were designed to measure and control heat and gases used in continuous firing iron and steel furnaces. By the late 1930s Brown found new markets for these temperature control devices and began producing a millivoltmeter to regulate and control the temperatures under which industrial processes took place. The records show that after World War II Brown experimented with remote control devices similar to those which had been recently developed at M.I.T.'s Servomechanisms Laboratory.

Hogan, J. Paul. Oral history interview with J. Paul Hogan 1995 February 10
Title:
Oral history interview with J. Paul Hogan 1995 February 10
The interview begins as J. Paul Hogan discusses his family background and early education in Lowes, Kentucky. Next follows a description of Hogan's college education at Murray State and teaching experiences at the high school and college levels. The central portion of the interview focuses on Hogan's career with Phillips Petroleum Company, which began after his position teaching physics at Oklahoma A&M was eliminated. Hogan's first work at Phillips was with Grant Bailey and Alfred Clark on double bond shifting. After about five years, he switched to the Fischer-Tropsch project, preparing and commercializing a process for the production of hydrocarbon. Next Hogan worked with Clark, and eventually others, beginning by investigating the nickel oxide catalyst and using it to produce 223-trimethylpentene and 223-trimethylpentane. Ultimately Hogan and Banks discovered polypropylene, and the interview examines some of the many patents and papers stemming from this research. Throughout the interview, Hogan comments on his relationships with Clark, Bailey, Robert L. Banks and Clarence Lanning. He also discusses the reaction of Phillips' management to the production of polymers, the work and decisions leading to the commercialization of polyethylene before polypropylene, and the legal situations surrounding the commercialization of polypropylene. Towards the end of the interview, Hogan examines Phillips' attitude toward publishing, records retention, and R&D; his own work on copolymerization; and his views on the research process and the roles of theory and intuition in it. The interview concludes with a discussion of the meaning of the Perkin Medal and the future of chemical R&D.

Cowan family. Cowan family papers, 1893-1966.
Title:
Cowan family papers, 1893-1966.
The Family Records group is organized according to subject or function, therefore, some overlap in subjects has been unavoidable. The series of Correspondence has been divided into six subseries, generally titled according to subject. Related documentation and some printed materials have been organized within each subseries. For example, the meeting minutes for the State Board of Education have been placed with W.E. Cowan's letters regarding his work with the State Board. W.T. Cowan corresponded and worked with a number of noted persons in his professional careers, among those found in these documents are Pres. Harry S. Truman, Sen. Burton K. Wheeler, and governors Sam Ford and Roy E. Ayers. W.T. Cowan also kept a journal of his visit to the 1893 Chicago World's Fair and wrote a family history of which there are multiple drafts which have been placed in the Biographical Materials series. W.T. and W.E. Cowan's professional papers contain information concerning Montana and U.S. politics, Montana land, irrigation, and mining projects, and the State Board of Education. The Financial Records group consists of series designated according to the business. Within each series documents have been separated according to document type and then arranged chronologically. Copies of customer receipts, financial statements and other loose leaf materials are followed by notebooks containing daily tallies and then by inventories. Business ledgers and accountbooks are not comprehensive. Those years not documented in ledgers generally have loose leaf materials which can help supply information for the missing period. Cowan taxes have been arranged chronologically and file titles indicate whether the file contains federal or state tax returns, or both.

Katz, Donald La Verne, 1907-. Oral history interview with Donald L. Katz 1986 August 22
Title:
Oral history interview with Donald L. Katz 1986 August 22
Donald Katz starts the interview by briefly referring to his current projects but then describes his family background and his genealogical interests, stimulated by his 1952 trip to his father's birthplace in a German village. Katz entered the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and majored in chemical engineering. As he continued into graduate studies, Donald Katz acted as George Brown's assistant, helping other graduate students and junior faculty, and with patent cases. When Katz started his research career at Phillips Petroleum he was assigned to reservoir studies. An invitation by Brown brought Katz back to the University of Michigan. The war years altered some of his teaching and research responsibilities and led him, for instance, into heat transfer investigations. On Brown's promotion to Dean, Katz took over as departmental chairman for several years. Katz describes his involvement in the introduction of computer education into the chemical engineering curriculum, both at Ann Arbor and nationally. Other recollections follow: safety and the hazards of bulk chemicals; pipelines; the underground storage of gas and air; the origins of the Handbook of Natural Gas Engineering. Katz concludes his interview with some thoughts on the changes in the academic chemical engineering profession over his long career.

J. Walter Thompson Company. Ted Wilson papers, 1966-1977.
Title:
Ted Wilson papers, 1966-1977.
The papers of Ted Wilson, former advertising executive of the J. Walter Thompson Company, in charge of international offices primarily during the 1960s. In the collection are correspondence, office files, client files, reports, and speeches as well as some advertisements. The papers depict Wilson as a skillful administrator coping with JWT's financial difficulties resulting from the world-wide economic hardship of the mid-1970s, and illustrate Wilson's involvement in the reorganization of the company, as well as his management of several advertising account teams, including the New Holland Machine Company and the Phillips Petroleum Company. The papers mention a variety of JWT company operations, including company programs such as Communispond, while touching on a variety of social issues including the employment of minorities and the Watergate affair. There is no material in this collection documenting the early years of Wilson's career or life after his retirement in 1977. The collection also lacks materials dating from 1971 through mid-1973, the period during which Wilson worked in JWT's Chicago Office.
