Kingsbury, Ilene Hanks. History of Sarah Elizabeth Gurr Whitney, 1940.
Title:
History of Sarah Elizabeth Gurr Whitney, 1940.
Photocopy of a microfilm copy of a typewritten document. The item is a biography of Sarah Elizabeth Gurr Whitney. Sarah's earliest memories were when she was on board the Janiford, a ship sailing from Sidney, Australia, to San Francisco, California. The journey took 103 days. She came with the "Australian Company" to Parowan, Utah, late in 1857. "Sarah E. Gurr was born in Sidney Australia, February 13, 1855 and was only two years old when she arrived in Parowan, Utah." At age fourteen "she went to work in the Hanks Cotton Factory on the South West side of the Town; there being by this time nine children in her father's family who needed support." Sarah later worked for William H. Dame in his telegraph company. When she was seventeen, Sarah married New Samuel Whitney. She continued to work in the telegraph office and taught classes in "telegraphy." She was the mother of nine children, "the oldest and youngest, however, did not live to adulthood." "Sarah Gurr Whitney was a devoted Church member" and held many positions as a member of the Mormon Church. "Sarah's happy laugh will always be remembered. Her hair was black and quite naturally curly." She died on 13 Feb. 1932.

Smith at meetings of the School of the Prophets held by Mormon Church members at the Mormon Meeting House in Parowan, Utah, from the institution of the School on 1868 Nov 1, to 1872 Sep 14. The minutes from 1868 Nov 1 include the rules of conduct to follow in order to become and remain a member. Subsequent minutes of the weekly meetings include discussions among members regarding Mormon Church doctrine, conduct of Church members, local business issues, interactions with non-Mormon whites and American Indians, and current events. School attendees mentioned in the minutes include W. C. McGregor, William Holyoak, J. R. Parramore, and Daniel Matheson. Lists of members of the School from 1870 Jun to 1872 Sep follow the minutes.
