Koussevitzky, Serge, 1874-1951. Serge Koussevitzky Archive, 1920-1976 (bulk: 1924-1951)
Title:
Serge Koussevitzky Archive 1920-1976 (bulk 1924-1951)
The archive is a collection of correspondence, personal and business papers, photographs, and other materials which document some of the most significant aspects of twentieth-century music. Through his work as a conductor and publisher, and his efforts to commission new musical works, Koussevitzky maintained deep ties with many of the finest composers and musicians of the day. These figures are represented in their personal and professional affiliations with the conductor. In addition to serving as a record of Koussevitzky's life and career, the collection extensively chronicles periods in the history of organizations such as the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Berkshire Music Center, the Koussevitzky Music Foundation, and the American International Music Fund. Material in the collection dates from Koussevitzky's years in his native Russia. The bulk of the collection dates from 1924 to 1951; it also contains material created after Koussevitzky's death, reflecting his widow's continuing work with various organizations and projects. Musical compositions commissioned by Serge Koussevitzky are part of the Serge Koussevitzky Music Foundation Collection, and are shelved in ML30.3c, ML30.3c2, ML30.3c3, and ML30.3e2.

Samuel P. Warren Collection, 1840-1950, (bulk 1880-1910)
Title:
Samuel P. Warren Collection 1840-1950 (bulk 1880-1910)
The collection consists of correspondence, concert and recital programs, church service programs, and related materials that were either collected by Warren himself or given to him by his students, colleagues and others in the New York City and throughout the United States. The letters in the collection, all addressed to Warren, are from a variety of sources, including Warren's pupils who later received some fame in their own right, for example William Crane Carl, Gerrit Smith, William C. Macfarlane, Frederick T. Steinway, and W.C. Hammond, and from colleagues and friends such as Dudley Buck, H. Clarence Eddy, H.E. Krehbiel, and Horatio Parker, Gustave Schirmer, and C. M. Widor. Among the programs in the collection are a chronological series (1874-1914) of church service bulletins that outline Warren's work at Holy Trinity Church and Grace Church in New York and First Presbyterian Church in East Orange, New Jersey; many of these items are annotated. The collection also contains important concert and recital programs from New York's major concert halls of the period. Noteworthy programs include those from: Carnegie Hall, featuring concerts of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Manuscript Society of New York, the Musical Art Society of New York, the Russian Symphony Society, and recitals by Paderewski; Chickering Hall, with programs featuring Hans von Bu ̈low, Vladimir de Pachmann, the Mendelssohn Glee Club, and the New York Vocal Union; and the Metropolitan Opera House, with performances by the Philharmonic Society of New York and the Damrosch Opera Company. Various other items are cataloged and classified separately: ML96.M97; ML96.L465; ML96.W36; and ML44.N3W17.

Edward and Marian MacDowell collection, 1861-1960 (bulk 1900-1956).
The materials of the Edward and Marian MacDowell Collection are organized in three distinct but interrelated categories: the papers of Edward A. MacDowell, the papers of Marian Nevins MacDowell, and the records of the MacDowell Colony. The assembled materials cover a period of more than 100 years but are most concentrated in two areas: holograph manuscripts and first editions of the music of Edward MacDowell, and Marian MacDowell's correspondence, most of which dates from the early 1900's until her death in 1956. Noteworthy correspondents include Teresa Carreño, Hamlin Garland, John Knowles Paine, Upton Sinclair, Elinor Wylie, Templeton Strong, William Rose, Elinor Benét, Leonard Bernstein, Dudley Buck, Willa Cather, Aaron Copland, Olin Downes, Edwin Arlington Robinson, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Thornton Wilder, Nina Maud Richardson, and publishers Breitkopf & Härtel and A.P. Schmidt. Also included are biographical writings by Anna Baetz, MacDowell's nurse, and Anna Nevins, sister of Marian MacDowell.
