Subjects included are radio, television, advertising, quack advertising, advertising control of radio, censorship, consumer programs, RCA control of radio, criticism of radio and television, the Federal Communications Commission, government control, programming, suppression, and suppression of F.J. Schlink's anti-NRA radio address (1934). Also includes materials on telephones, public utilities, electrical service, gas rates, and the U.S. Postal Service.

The records include correspondence, union and CR reports, newspaper and magazine clippings, legal documents, notes, and photographs. Subjects include negotiations, background and events of the strike, arbitration by Baldwin and others, strike publicity, CR personnel involved in the strike, labor turnover at CR, left wing connections of the union, subscriber support or cancellations, photographs of picketing, and riot damage to cars and buildings. The records also include legal documents and correspondence of William Consodine, Shelton Pitney, Edward Garfield and others along with notes for several criminal and civil cases related to the strike. Material also includes the NLRB case brought by the union, transcript of the 1937 NLRB appeal, and a 1978 memoir of the proceedings by Edward Garfield, Consumers' Research counsel.

Title: Consumerism general files--Consumers Union, 1933-1980.

The records document Consumers' Research's interest in and tracking of the formation, growth, associations, and problems of Consumers Union after the 1935 strike which led several Consumers' Research employees and supporters to form Consumers Union. CR was interested in the CU board members, sponsors, and employees whose "relationships" or "connections" made them suspected leftists, communists or fellow travelers. In addition to red baiting, CR attempted to denigrate CU by questioning their technical competence in consumer product testing and their discussion of contraception and health questions. Material on individual CU board members or staff includes some correpondence prior to or during the 1935 strike when individuals were politically allied with CR and later, when CR considered these individuals enemies. Scattered throughout the series are files on individuals who were extremely important to the development and operation of CU such as Arthur Kallet and Colston E. Warne, but there are also files on individuals not closely associated with CU including Heywood Broun, Anna Louise Strong, labor leader Michael Quill, and CR board member and consumer advocate Ralph Nader.

By collecting information on various political movements, individials, and organizations involved in certain labor, civil rights, consumer, scientific, leftist, or New Deal causes, Consumers' Research invented and reinforced their strategies on how to fight communism. Consumers' Research collected files to document the links (perceived or real) between individuals or organizations associated with the Communist Party or any other leftist groups in the United States. Files were compiled on individuals and groups when they were identified by CR as communists, fellow travelers, left-wing infiltrators, or front organizations.

These notebooks include handwritten notes, testing results, loose papers, photographs, drawings, product or packaging fragments, charts, and daily progress statistics. The product test results in this series are represented in the Technical Files. Dispersed throughout the Technical Files are additional laboratory notebooks pertaining to specific products. The notebooks in this series are organized by staff member and contain product tests. Indexes or listings of products tested are included in most of the notebooks.
