Chiefly correspondence between Ellen Shackelford Gift and George Washington Gift, written before and after their marriage, with a few letters from other members of the Shackeford and Gift families and from friends, including Catesby Ap Roger Jones, Gift's captain on the "Chattahoochee." Most of the letters were written by George to Ellen while he was serving on Confederate ships, including the "Chattahoochee," based at Chattahoochie, Fla.; the "Gaines," based at Mobile, Ala.; and the "Tallahassee," based at Wilmington, N.C. All of these letters concern daily life. After the war, Gift wrote many letters from Memphis, Tenn., as well as a few from New York, Hong Kong, and other places where he was involved in a variety of business ventures. These letters chiefly concern his daily activities, family news, and routine events, though there are extensive descriptions of Hong Kong. Ellen's letters to George chiefly concern family life.

Title: Papers of Samuel Barron, 1820-1899.

Barron corresponds with family, friends, and naval officers about cruises, naval affairs, and politics, as well as family news, and life in Norfolk, and Essex County, Virginia. Of interest are letters written during the Norfolk yellow fever epidemic of 1855. A large group of Civil War correspondence deals with the safety of U.S. vessels at Pensacola in 1861, the establishment of the Confederate Navy, the defense of the Outer Banks of North Carolina, his capture at Hatteras and eleven months imprisonment in Boston. After his exchange Barron corresponds about the reorganization of the Confederate Navy, the defense of the Mississippi, Tennessee, and Cumberland rivers with iron-clad gunboats, and his mission abroad to order iron-clads and outfit other vessels for the Confederacy. Postwar letters deal almost entirely with family news. The collection also includes some genealogy, photographs, clippings, a sectional sketch of a gunboat and some school-girl essays. Among the correspondents are Samuel Francis DuPont, David Glasgow Farragut, Joseph Eggleston Johnston, Catesby Ap Roger Jones, Stephen Russell Mallory, George Edward Pickett, John Slidell, Francis Henry Smith, John Tyler, Gideon Welles, William Conway Whittle, and Henry Alexander Wise.

Although commencing on 18 December 1843, Jones's narrative begins retrospectively with his introduction to the Navy in June 1836. Jones made frequent use of ship's logs and recorded information regarding destinations, dates, distances, time travelled, days in port, weather, including a particularly fine description of a gale in which he believed his ship was sinking, and the names of his fellow officers. Jones's oral examination for commissioned grade and his activities at sea and during lengthy furloughs with his family in Virginia are also described in the journal.

Catesby Ap Roger Jones, scion of a prominent Virginia family, served as an officer in the United States Navy from 1836 to 1861, then accepted a commission in the Confederate Navy until 1865. He was commanding officer of the C.S.S. Virginia (Merrimac) and afterward served as an ordnance officer at Columbus, Ga., Charlotte, N.C., and Selma, Ala., where he married Gertrude T. The papers consist chiefly of McCabe's correspondence with prominent scholars, U.S. and British literary figures, and Civil War veterans. Topics include the Civil War, the Confederacy, Confederate veterans organizations, World War I, black suffrage, the University of Virginia, and British literature. Of particular interest are accounts of the destruction of Hampton and the seizing of the powder magazine at Norfolk, accounts of the Meuse-Argonne offensive, and of Australian troops in Egypt, the retaining of Robert E. Lee's body in Lexington, Swedenborgianism in 1864, and Einstein's theory of relativity in 1920, the Rotunda fire, changes in the University of Virginia's degree program, and a controversy regarding professor William Howard Perkinson. Also of interest are a letter of Robert E. Lee on William Johnson Pegram, a letter of recommendation from Matthew Arnold, three pages of Thackeray's "The Virginians," a sonnet of Egerton Webbe copied and annotated by Leigh Hunt, two pages from John Richard Green's "Short history of the English people," Edmund Clarence Stedman's "The old admiral," and a poem on being seasick written in imitation of Tennyson by John Reuben Thompson. Tennyson items include a letter,1884 Aug 20 from Audrey Tennyson, brief social letters 1884 Nov 26 and 1888 Feb 12 from Lord Tennyson, a copy of "Carmen Saeculare, an Ode in Honor of the Jubilee of Queen Victoria," sent to McCabe, 1887 Aug 19, and a quotation by Tennyson, 1889 Aug 8. The papers also contain COPIES of letters including Edgar Allan Poe to John Collins McCabe critiquing a poem by McCabe; Thomas Jefferson to Francis Walker Gilmer re Gilmer's mission to obtain University of Virginia professors abroad; visits to Tennyson by McCabe, 1884 and 1887; Anne Isabella Thackeray Ritchie on her father's writing habits and a note to her from Robert Browning; Henry James on a promised volume and his "busy scribbling autumn"; and a letter of Stonewall Jackson to Robert E. Lee re the impending battle of Chancellorsville. There are papers, 1757-1796, of McCabe's ancestor George Taylor chiefly re his iron business in Easton, Pennsylvania including a plat of the site of present day Pittston, Pennsylvania, 1771. In addition there are class rolls from McCabe's University School, "The old Virginia gentleman" by George William Bagby, an autograph book, 1905 - 1908, an address book, 1920, and a replica of the great seal of the Confederacy, 1911.

The collection consists mainly of letters to Captain Samuel Barron before the Civil War and during Reconstruction from fellow officers and family members. Topics include the death of his wife and child in the Norfolk yellow fever epidemic, 1855, Naval patronage and commands, the Italian Civil War, 1860, the Confederate defense of Norfolk and the Virginia and Carolina coast, and his efforts to become a peanut farmer after the war. The papers contain correspondence, financial and legal papers, genealogical papers, diaries, memoirs, class notebooks, clippings, photographs, maps, and memorabilia. The correspondence is chiefly between Landon Carter Berkeley, a master at Episcopal High and Danville (Va.) lawyer, and Anne Poe (Harrison) Berkeley, a student at Wellesley, and teacher in Alabama and Maryland prior to her marriage. There are also many letters of Francis Lewis Berkeley, Albemarle Co. farmer, Norborne Berkeley, an engineer in West Virginia in the 1880s, and Cynthia Berkeley. Topics include the election of 1856, the Civil War, horse racing, Dwight Lyman Moody's Wellesley talks, the Miller School, Oregon in the 1880s, White Sulphur Springs, and the Philadelphia Orthopaedic Hospital and Infirmary for Nervous Diseases. Slave hiring, Mary Custis Lee, Chilly Langhorne and William Mahone are all mentioned. The collection also contains sermons, poetry, the Civil War diary of Daniel P. Smith, a Confederate sargeant in the seige of Port Hudson, the memoirs of Norborne Berkeley mentioning Seven Pines, 1st and 2nd Bull Run, and Gettysburg. In the financial and legal papers are indentures, bills and receipts, cancelled checks for family members and for John Crissey, an in-law, and an indenture concerning the lands of Thomas Nelson. Also included are the memoirs of Edmund Berkeley with andecdotes about Lafayette, Catesby Ap Roger Jones, Andrew Jackson, Charles Dickens, Sam Houston, John Tyler, the explosion of the Peacemaker on the U.S.S. Princeton, and the Civil War including battles of 1st Bull Run, Ball's Bluff and Gettysburg. In addition there are geology notebooks, 1896-1897, and a farming diary of Francis L. Berkeley, a school notebook, 1887, of Cynthia Berkeley, a mill ledger, 1817-1818, of William Noland, accounts, 1854-1885, of William Noland Berkeley, a stock register, 1915-1930 of G.D. Smith with E.L. Rothschild & Co., a trigonometry notebook, 1932, and an autobiography of Randolph Carter Berkeley.
