Catesby Ap Roger Jones, scion of a prominent Virginia family, served as an officer in the United States Navy from 1836 to 1861, then accepted a commission in the Confederate Navy until 1865. He was commanding officer of the C.S.S. Virginia (Merrimac) and afterward served as an ordnance officer at Columbus, Ga., Charlotte, N.C., and Selma, Ala., where he married Gertrude T. Tartt and settled after the war. Although commencing on 18 December 1843, Jones's narrative begins retrospectively with his introduction to the Navy in June 1836. Jones made frequent use of ship's logs and recorded information regarding destinations, dates, distances, time travelled, days in port, weather, including a particularly fine description of a gale in which he believed his ship was sinking, and the names of his fellow officers. Jones's oral examination for commissioned grade and his activities at sea and during lengthy furloughs with his family in Virginia are also described in the journal.
