Correspondence, legal documents, financial papers and other items chiefly relating to the history of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York and Virginia. A large proportion of the papers concern the business affairs of Joseph Higbee of Trenton, Nathaniel Pendleton of New York, Thomas Woodruff and John Beatty, presidents of the Trenton Banking Company and Robert Morris of Philadelphia. Also in the papers are letters by several United States presidents, cabinet officers, Supreme Court justices and governors.

A diary kept by Second Lieutenant William Pennington while serving in the Second Regiment of Artillery under Major General Knox. Entries cover 4 May 1780 through 23 March 1781. The commission is dated 21 April 1780 and is signed by Samuel Huntington.

Title: William S. Pennington papers, 1780-1781.

The papers consist of a commission and the diary of William S. Pennington (1757-1826) from the American Revolution. The commission is signed by Samuel Huntington, President of the Congress of the United States in 1780 and retroactively promotes Pennington to the rank of 2nd lieutenant in the Second Regiment of Artillery in the United States Army as of September 12, 1778. Pennington's diary was written from May 4, 1780 to March 23, 1781 during his time as a 2nd lieutenant in the army. He describes the daily life of a soldier, writing about marches, dining with friends, letters received, visits home, and news and hearsay from the front. The entries track Pennington's movements during this period but also give insight into the movements of the larger army and major figures in the War, including General George Washington who Pennington dines with.

Title: Nicholas Murray notes, 1776-1853.

This collection contains the notes of Reverend Nicholas Murray, the pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Elizabeth, New Jersey. The notes were compiled cover the years 1776 to 1853, and are Murray's research on the death of his predecessor, Reverend James Caldwell. Based upon these notes, Murray presented a paper to the New Jersey Historical Society in 1848, in which he asserts that Caldwell was indeed murdered by James Morgan, an American soldier on sentry duty, in 1781. Murray's supporting evidence is documented in the affidavits, correspondence, and other research notes included in this collection. Amongst the witnesses submitting affidavits are Hannah Austin, William Clark, Samuel Downer, Mary Grover, Shepard Kollock, Elizabeth Ross, James Ross, John Stiles, Belcher Woodruff, Henry Woodruff, and Stephen Woodruff. Notes contain Murray's incoming letters, which covers the years 1807 to 1853, all of which is in reference to his research on Caldwell. Correspondents include J.F. Caldwell, Samuel Miller, Aaron Ogden, and William S. Pennington.

The papers largely consist of the correspondence, court documents, contracts, and financial documents of William Pennington (1796-1862), dating from 1795-1915, with bulk dates of 1820-1865. Most of the correspondence in the collection is written to William Pennington (1796-1862), with a lesser number of letters to Caroline Burnet Pennington, William Pennington (1869-1922), and Albert P. Condit. Correspondents of William Pennington (1796-1862) include Alexander M. Cumming, Israel Crane, Robert Campbell, John Cox, Joseph C. Hornblower, James Robertson, and Anthony Rutgers, and the letters mostly pertain to legal matters and court cases. Pennington's legal career is also documented in the court records contained in these papers. There are briefs, arguments, notes, opinions, pleas, notices, depositions, warrants, summons, subpoenas, and power of attorneys for various cases Pennington was involved in. There are also the charges in a case brought by Samuel Pennington (1765-1835) and Stephen Gould against Robert Hays regarding a breach of contract to sell and deliver the Newark newspaper, The Centinel of Freedom. The papers contain, too, contracts and financial documents of William Pennington (1796-1862) and his business acquaintances, friends, and family. These items include land deeds for Newark and Pequannock, New Jersey, bonds, an inheritance agreement, promissory notes, checks, court bills, and a small collection of signatures including the autograph of Buffalo Bill.
