The collection consists chiefly of letters, but there are also documents, manuscripts (including 53 volumes of diaries kept by Kimball and his wife, Mary Porter Rogers Kimball), newspaper clippings and other printed ephemera. Subject matter represented in the collection include: the railroad business and related industries; Kimball's wife and family; the expansion of the Union Pacific into northern Utah and Idaho; mining in Idaho and Montana; railroad competition; political intrigue involving railroads on both local and national levels; and the prevalent evils of the free-pass system. Significant persons represented in the collection include Sidney Dillon, Jay Gould, and Thomas Alexander Scott.

This collection contains manuscripts, agreements, and correspondence, most of which is related to J. B. Houston, the Pacific Mail Steamship Company, and the Southern Pacific Company. These items include an agreement between Collis Huntington, Sidney Dillon, Russell Sage, and J. B. Houston regarding the buying and selling of Pacific Mail Steamship Company stock; extracts from the minutes of a board meeting; and two statements regarding Thomas Reddington, J. W. Throckmorton, Joseph E. Johnston, railroad legislation, and the Congressional Committee on Pacific Railroads. Other authors include Senator Roscoe Conkling, Ulysses S. Grant and William Tecumseh Sherman. Also included are two letters to J. B. Houston's daughter (her first name unknown) from soldiers, one stationed in Cuba and involved in the Spanish-American War, the other participating in the South African War. The collection also includes several pieces of ephemera.

Papers of McCormick, inventor of the reaper and a Chicago industrialist, comprising correspondence, memoranda, and letterbooks concerning the growth of the McCormick Harvesting Machine Company in both the domestic and foreign fields, and dealing with McCormick's many other interests, particularly the Presbyterian Church and several charities; his activities as a member of the state and national Democratic party; and his investments, chiefly in Chicago real estate, railroads, and mines. Also included are deeds, contracts, investment proposals, and other documents. Some of the letters are to or from McCormick's wife Nettie Fowler, their son Cyrus, Jr., and others associated with the McCormick Harvesting Machine Co. The earliest dated items were written or received by Cyrus' father, Robert McCormick, and by other family members.
