The United Hatters Cap and Millinery Workers International Union (UHCMW) was formed in 1934 by the amalgamation of United Hatters of North America (UHNA) and the Cloth Hat, Cap and Millinery Workers International Union (CHCMW). About two thirds of the collection consists (principally) of the separate records of these two unions prior to their merger, and (secondarily) of records of joint bodies established in the decade prior to the merger. The materials pertaining to the Danbury Hatters Case comprise about one fifth of the collection. The remainder consists of records of earlier unionizing efforts among hatters, and of the UHCMW in the decades following the merger, and a set of of primary source research materials and notes compiled by Charles H. Green for his book . The collection contains minutes, scrapbooks (financial and membership records), clippings, ephemera, histories and biographies, and legal documents. Consists of selected files of fifteen national and international unions affiliated with the AFL during the presidency of Samuel Gompers (1886-1894, 1895-1924.) Selection was limited to records documenting the affiliates' relations with the Federation. For the most part, files consist of correspondence between Gompers and the unions, although documents referring to Gompers and his leadership of the AFL are also included. Correspondence reveals the efforts the AFL made to encourage cooperation among its affiliates and convince them of their common interests. Major subjects dealt with include jurisdictional battles between unions and ethnic tensions, ideological disputes and personal differences both within and between organizations, and the efforts of the AFL leadership to forge a united labor movement out of widely diverse and discordant elements. AFL circulars discuss such issues as unfavorable judicial decisions, trials of activists, significant legislation, labor's part in World War I, and conflicts with dissident labor and political groups, such as the Industrial Workers of the World, the United Hebrew Trades, socialists and communists. The documents include biographical material illuminating the careers of some of the major labor leaders of the day. The American Labor Conference on International Affairs (ALCIA) was organized in February 1943 by several labor leaders from the American Federation of Labor, the Congress of Industrial Organizations, and the Railway Brotherhoods. The membership of ALCIA included American labor leaders, American and European scholars, and representatives of the European labor movement who lived in the United States. ALCIA studied political, economic, labor, and educational problems arising from World War II. It published reports, the quarterly "International Postwar Problems," the biweekly, "A.L.C. News Letter," and the monthly, "Modern Review." The ALCIA also participated in labor conferences. The records consist of correspondence, resolutions, constitutions and bylaws, reports, conference papers, press releases, speeches, minutes, memoranda, newspaper clippings, pamphlets, drafts of articles, and form letters. There is considerable information about American policy toward France and Charles DeGaulle, the postwar objectives of organized labor, the reconstruction of Germany, postwar European problems, and American policy toward Asia. Information about numerous conferences is included as well as drafts for articles, reports, and editorials. Rose Schneiderman (1882-1972), Jewish labor organizer, socialist, suffragist, campaigner for protective legislation for women, and leader of the Women's Trade Union League(WTUL). Schneiderman played a leading role in the New York City garment workers upsurge of 1909-14 and was founder and president of International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union (ILGWU), Local 62, Dry Goods Workers. After losing her bid for the presidency of the New York WTUL, she became in 1914 a national organizer for the ILGWU but, dissatisfied with the place of women in the Union, returned to the WTUL in 1916, and became head of the NY WTUL in 1918, and later the national WTUL, holding both posts throughout the remainder of the WTUL's existence (through 1950). After World War I her focus shifted to legislative reform (with the notable exception of her opposition to the Equal Rights Amendment), and she drew close to the Democratic party and established a friendship with Eleanor Roosevelt. Schneiderman served on the National Recovery Administration's labor advisory board in 1934, and as Secretary of the New York State Department of Labor 1933-44. Her autobiography, , was published in 1967. This collection contains correspondence (leading feminists are represented), a set of letters from Pauline Newman, autobiographical typescripts, speeches, clippings, minutes, reports, and other documents representing Schneiderman’s activity in WTUL, in public service, and in the women’s suffrage movement. Information is provided on the relation of class and gender, and the networks that sustained Schneiderman and other women in the male dominated trade union movement.
