Title: William Denman miscellany, 1917-1959.

Consists chiefly of seven letters from Woodrow Wilson to Denman concerning the events leading to Denman's resignation from his post as chairman of the U.S. Shipping Board in 1917. Denman disagreed with General George W. Goethals, general manager of the U.S. Shipping Board Emergency Fleet Corp., over matters regarding shipbuilding efforts for the war emergency. As a result, Wilson forced both men to resign. Also includes an undated letter from Edith Bolling Wilson to Denman on behalf of her husband, and a letter, Dec. 7, [1917?], from Denman to her concerning war legislation. In addition, there is "In Memoriam," a printed transcript of the proceedings held at a special session of the U.S. Court of Appeals in San Francisco, Calif., March 30, 1959, concerning Denman following his death.

Kiser Photo Co. photographs, 1901-1999, 1901-1927

Title: Kiser Photo Co. photographs 1901-1999 1901-1927

Fred H. Kiser, an accomplished mountaineer and promoter, was one of the most successful and widely known landscape and commercial photographers in the American West during the first two decades of the early 20th century. His work is credited with popularizing Crater Lake National Park and the Columbia River Gorge in Oregon and establishing Glacier National Park in Montana. He and his brother Oscar also operated the Lewis and Clark Official Photographic Co. at the 1905 Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition in Portland, Or. The collection includes photographs taken by the brothers, as well as by Clarence L. Winter, Fred's partner who later operated Winter Photo Company.

Photographs taken by Fred H. Kiser (1878-1955), renowned mountain and landscape photographer of the American West, and his Kiser Photo Co. of Portland, Or., most 1901-1927. The bulk of the images are examples of Kiser's work in Montana, including Glacier National Park; Oregon, including Crater Lake National Park; and along the Columbia River Gorge and Columbia River Highway, among other places, as well as photographs of various places in Portland, Or. Other subjects include Kiser's work for the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis, Mo. in 1904; the Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition in Portland, Or. in 1905; landcsape photographs taken for various railroad companies, 1903-1916; and photographs of ships and shipbuilding in the Portland, Or. area, taken for the Emergency Fleet Corporation, 1918-1919. Other imprints in the collection include (but are not limited to) Kiser Bros. and the Winter Photo Co., both of Portland, Or. The collection also includes postcards and other photomechanical prints, as well as publications, made from Kiser's work and biographical material about Kiser and his brother and partner, Oscar H. Kiser, dating from 1903-1999. Includes vintage prints, copy prints made from original negatives, panoramic prints, and stereographs. Many of the photographs are hand-colored.

Photograph album collected by Merv Johnson, author of "In Search of Steam Donkeys: Logging Equipment in Oregon." The images date from 1917-1922 and depict logging equipment such as boilers and steam donkey engines at various lumber camps and lumber companies in the Pacific Northwest . Companies depicted include Bloedel, Stewart, and Welch Logging Operations and British Columbia Mills, Timber, and Trading Company in British Columbia; Snoqualmie Falls Lumber Company in Washington; Smith-Powers Logging Company, and Wind River Lumber Company in Oregon, among others. There are also some photographs of a scotch boiler belonging to the Emergency Fleet Corporation being loaded on to the ship, "Grace Dollar." Photographers include George M. Weister of Portland, Or., and Cress-Dale Photo Company and Frank H. Nowell, both of Seattle, Wash.

Also included are a war zone pass issued to Cox by the Port of New York Office of the U.S. Customs Service and dated 1918, June 13, as well as an identification card bearing the same date and issued to Cox by the United States Shipping Board.
