Title: Alfred Irving Hallowell Papers 1892-1981

Alfred Irving ("Pete") Hallowell was an anthropologist best known for his studies of Ojibwa culture and world-view, and the innovative use of the Rorschach Test in his studies of the psychological interrelations of individuals and their culture. Early in his career, Hallowell worked as a social case worker for Family Service, and even after moving on to study anthropology in 1920 (M.A.), he carried with him an interest in ethnic and racial culture, developing additional interests in psychological testing. Except for the years 1944-1947, when he taught at Northwestern University, Hallowell spent his entire career at the University of Pennsylvania where he was professor of anthropology, professor of anthropological psychiatry in the Medical School, and curator of social anthropology at the University Museum. A cultural anthropologist, Hallowell's use of clinical psychological methods, especially Rorschach tests, was both innovative and controversial in his discipline. In his research, he concentrated on the Algonkian Indians, especially the Abenaki and Ojibwa Indians of Canada and Wisconsin (Berens River, Lake Winnipeg, Manitoba, and Lac du Flambeau, Wisconsin areas), and the Saulteaux of Berens River. The Alfred Irving Hallowell Papers (1892-1981) contain correspondence, subject files, manuscripts of published and unpublished works by Hallowell, papers by colleagues and students, research notes kept by Hallowell, with a special emphasis on social organization, personality, behavior, psychology, religion, and folklore. The collection of several hundred photographs provides rich graphic documentation of Hallowell's work among the Ojibwa and Abnaki Indians during the 1930s.

Dummer, Ethel Sturges, 1866-1954. Papers, 1766-1962 (inclusive).

Correspondence, speeches, photos, reports, minutes, and articles document Dummer's efforts on behalf of juvenile delinquents, prostitutes, and illegitimate children, as well as her interest in progressive education and Chicago public schools and her work with leaders of the mental hygiene movement. Included is correspondence with her daughter, Ethel Mintzer, director of the Francis W. Parker School in San Diego, and such sociologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and educators as Jane Addams, Havelock Ellis, Sigmund Freud, Jessie Hodder, Karen Horney, Julia Lathrop, Norman Thomas, Miriam Van Waters, and others. Fisher's papers include her correspondence with her husband and others, a note from Supreme Court Justice Felix Frankfurter, records of the LWV of Winnetka, IL, and poetry. Collection also includes 18th and 19th century letters and documents of the Sturges and Dummer families.

Manuel Conrad Elmer received one of the first doctorate degrees in sociology given by the University of Chicago. His dissertation and early research utilized social survey techniques. In 1926, he helped to found the department of sociology at the University of Pittsburgh. The Manuel Conrad Elmer papers comprise 1.5 linear feet of material and date from 1907 to 1980. The papers include Elmer’s sociological publications; additional, non-sociological writings from later in his life; a series of interviews of Elmer conducted in 1978 and 1979; personal records from his college years; a scrapbook of newspaper articles, further newspaper clippings and announcements; and correspondence.

It supplements the material contained in the original Burgess collection by providing raw data for research projects as well as by extending the date range of material and series already attested in the original Burgess collection. Particularly well represented are Burgess's survey research projects, his involvement with urban sociology during the depression and early years of WWII, as well as his extended career as a teacher at the University of Chicago.
