The collection consists of the papers of May Miller from 1906 to 1989. The papers include writings, correspondence, subject files, writings by others, printed material, photographs, scrapbooks, artwork, and legal and financial records. Writings include original manuscripts of her published and unpublished plays, poetry, and short stories, from 1910 through the 1980s. The collection also includes writings by others. The correspondence is of both a personal and professional nature and includes letters and notes from Gwendolyn Brooks, Sterling Brown, Dorothy Goldberg, Josephine Jacobsen, Pinkie Gordon Lane, John Pauker, and others. There is a small amount of family correspondence, including two early letters (1906) to her father.

Bemis, School of History and Economics, Vanderbilt University, 1892; letter, with enclosures from Rev. J.C. Price, founder and first president of Livingstone College, 1892; and typed letter from Charles Chesnutt, 1918. Letters to Charles Chesnutt include a handwritten letter (copy) from W.E.B. DuBois in which he discusses his intention to found a magazine, 1903; letter from Kelly Miller, 1903; typed letter from Charles N. Anderson of the Coney Island Jockey Club, 1902; and printed card with an excerpt from his The Marrow of Tradition, signed by Chesnutt (copy). Other letters include a post card and note from Blanche K. Bruce, 1871; letter from William Still to Karl Kotz, 1883; note from Wallace Bruce (U.S. Consul in Edinburgh) to Mr. and Mrs. Angus, 1893; letter from J.W. Rainey, first African-American Congressman, to the President recommending a Henry Noah for the position of Collector of Customs in Charleston, 1887.

Washington, Booker T., 1856-1915. Booker T. Washington papers, 1903-1916.

Title: Booker T. Washington papers, 1903-1916.

Collection comprises correspondence and related material concerning the Carnegie Hall conference (January 6-8, 1904) and the subsequent formation of the Committee of Twelve. The conference was a critical event in the early history of the African American civil rights movement. It was organized by Washington and W.E.B. Du Bois, and it brought together many of the most prominent African American leaders in the United States. Rather than a dialogue, the conference became a debate over the ascendancy of Washington's accommodationist views versus Du Bois' demands for full equality for African Americans. Despite their differences in viewpoint, when Washington proposed the Committee of Twelve to continue the work of the conference, Du Bois joined. However, when Du Bois' proposals that the committee become a more extensive civil rights organization were ignored, he resigned. The letters in the collection provide documentary evidence for these events, as well as commentaries on the status of African Americans. They detail Washington's relationships with many of the key African American leaders of his day. The most striking is Washington's correspondence with W.E.B. Du Bois, where the tension and ideological conflict between the two men is clearly demonstrated. Other prominent correspondents include Whitefield McKinlay, Judson W. Lyons, Kelly Miller, T. Thomas Fortune, Francis J. Grimké, Clement G. Morgan, Robert R. Moton, E.H. Morris, Fredrick L. McGhee, James H. Hayes, John S. Durham, Emmett J. Scott, Hugh Browne, Alexander Walters, Charles W. Chestnutt, and Charles W. Russell. Other items include a typed preface to, photocopy of, and original copy of the pamphlet "Why Disfranchisement is Bad" (July 1904); a photocopy of and a copy of the original article, "The Estimate of an eminent Virginian of the merit of the book THE WHITE MAN'S BURDEN;" and a poem, "The Empty Sleeve." Acquired as part of the John Hope Franklin Collection of African and African-American Documentation.

Title: Kelly Miller family papers, 1894-1989.

The collection consists of the papers of Kelly Miller from 1894-1989. The papers contain correspondence, writings, subject files, printed material, photographs and other papers, and the papers of his wife Annie Mae Miller. The correspondence includes incoming and outgoing letters regarding article submissions and academic appointments. Correspondence from civic groups to which he belonged and personal correspondence from family and acquaintances is also included. The writings by Miller include manuscript and typescript copies of article drafts, outlines, poetry, speeches, from 1916-1939. Topics of the writings include constitutional law, analysis of the 14th, 15th, and 18th amendments, prohibition, lynching and mob violence, the New Deal, presidential policy analysis, African-Americans and communism, race relations, the Republican Party, African American colleges and universities, and Howard University. Writings by others consist of articles, speeches, and one radio transcript, which discusses James Bland, an African American musician about whom Kelly Miller researched. The subject files consist of records from institutions and associations to which Miller belonged and include reports, reviews, and meeting minutes. The subject files also contain records kept by Miller during his tenure as dean at Howard University, such as meeting minutes and reports from the Board of Trustees, faculty meetings, the committee on salaries, the alumni association, among others between 1922 and 1935. The printed material series is divided into printed material about Miller, printed material by Miller, and general printed material which he collected. In addition, a set of scrapbooks contains articles by and about Miller. Photographs and other papers include portraits and candid shots of Miller as well as a photo album of Miller with Howard University alumni and family. The collection also includes material relating to Kelly Miller's wife and children including personal correspondence, financial records, newspaper clippings, and photographs.
