Moldenhauer Archives at the Library of Congress, circa 1000-circa 1990
Title:
Moldenhauer Archives at the Library of Congress circa 1000-circa 1990
The archives consist primarily of music (both manuscript and printed), correspondence, photographs, sound recordings, books, newspaper clippings, printed programs, drawings, and engravings. They span years from the Middle Ages to the present, and include documents of composers, musicians, and literary figures, among others. The music in the collection includes holograph scores or sketches, both published and unpublished, as well as a number of copyists' and printed scores, transcriptions, and arrangements by composers and musicians such as Beethoven, Bloch, Brahms, Chopin, Franck, Mendelssohn, Puccini, Rimsky-Korsakov, Schoenberg, Webern, and many others. Also included is historically important correspondence, such as letters of Metastasio and Handel. Some composers (Arnold Schoenberg and Anton Webern, for example) are represented by numerous manuscripts. A sample of other composers, musicians, and literary figures that are represented by both music and nonmusical materials includes George Auric, Johann Sebastian Bach, Béla Bartók, Hector Berlioz, Georges Bizet, Pierre Boulez, Anton Bruckner, Charles Burney, Feruccio Busoni, Claude Debussy, Frederick Delius, Hermann Hesse, György Ligeti, Federico Garca Lorca, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Marice Ravel, Rainer Maria Rilke, Frank Wedekind, Kurt Weill, and Gioseffo Zarlino.

Hanover royal music archive, 1651-1951, 1770-1870
Title:
Hanover royal musicarchive 1651-1951 1770-1870
The Hanover Royal MusicArchive consists of printed and manuscript music, printed books about music, and related materials assembled by Ernest Augustus, King of Hanover, and hissuccessors. A significant component originated in England and concerns musicalactivity of several children of George III, circa 1770-1837, particularlyErnest Augustus, then Duke of Cumberland, and Princess Augusta, as well asPrince George of Cumberland, son of Ernest Augustus and later Georg V, King ofHanover. These materials moved to Hanover, apparently circa 1837 when ErnestAugustus succeeded William IV as King of Hanover. In Hanover, the collectionwas expanded by Ernest Augustus and Georg V, and much of the present contentrelates to music in the Hanoverian court through the mid-nineteenth century. While most materials date circa 1770-1870, a few items extend this span fromthe seventeenth through the mid-twentieth century.

Autograph letter signed, dated : Paris, to [Humbert Ferrand], 1830 May 13.
Expressing gratitude for Ferrand's anxiety on Berlioz's behalf--"it is indeed a rare thing to find a complete man, who has a soul, a heart, and imagination," saying that he did not write the program of the Symphonie fantastique out of vengeance--"I pity and despise her [Harriet Smithson]. She is but an ordinary type of woman, endowed with an instinctive power of expressing those pangs of the human soul which she has never felt, and incapable of entertaining a grand and noble sentiment such as the one with which I have honored her," saying that plans are well advanced for the première of the Fantastique on the 30th, that if Harriet reads the program "she cannot help recognizing herself," mentioning Les francs-juges, Haitzinger, Schroeder-Devrient, [Weber's] Freischütz, [Beethoven's] Fidelio, Onslow, Eugénie Lesueur, Nourrit, Hiller, etc.
